RD Part 2 Prologue: Set for Stun

In this Part, we'll be exploring the a country that should be at peace. "Should be" being the operative word.

We'll be moving on to Crimea entirely- I'm fairly positive no characters appear in both Parts 1 and 2.

That... probably feels incredibly horrifying to think about. Just... while the wounds are still fresh, you find out Daein is getting back on its feet with the same symbol of power. Pelleas is nothing like Ashnard, and Micaiah is more friendly to non-beorc... but that's about where the differences end.

It's not like Crimea has things great.

Remember how we restored Elincia to the throne and then just... left? Turns out she hasn't exactly been... beloved by the people with experience.

Zoom in on Crimea. Part 2 occurs entirely within Crimea.

Radiant Dawn Part 1: Daein War of Independence

There's nothing that says "good and evil is a matter of perspective" quite like restoring the country you fought to destroy in the last game. What Part 1 is a nice demonstration of is a very condensed version of a Path of Radiance-adjacent "Fire Emblem Story", rebelling against a tyrannical invading power to restore peace to our country of origin. We have all the essential ingredients, too: an Ike, an Elincia, and a Soren!

...Say, what did that Soren do for us? Izuka certainly knew his organisational stuff, and without him there would be no Daein Liberation Army, but his strategies were utter garbage and he didn't notice the whole "Micaiah was stealing Pelleas's thunder" until the last moment. It doesn't help that our army's main source of strategies, after him, is counting on Micaiah's Farsight combined with some of Tauroneo's textbook plays. That's an especially concerning note to end on when Micaiah's starting to lose her grip on Farsight. He also kinda shines a light on the whole "Daein is still racist" thing...

This Part is the one that follows the main series formula the most closely, and condensed, it's kinda easy to spot how frontloaded it can be. The back "half" of actually fighting the oppressive army is incredibly short, if it ever existed in the first place, and the game has to call for help to get the thing to shut down and proceed to a different direction.

I'll be open about this: I'm not as sold on the Dawn Brigade as a faction. My issues with it, though, tie in a great deal with the way Daein, Micaiah, Pelleas and Izuka continue on from here. Standing on its own merits, though, Part 1 is a very good story that sets up the pins for later events to capitalise on. It does what it needs to do, but things get... interesting when the time comes for the Dawn Brigade to return to the story. Potentially, part of the problem is that the game didn't give the Daein Army the things they needed for their future role while doing this setup, but there's only so much the part of the game intended to ease new players into the way RD works could do to fix that.

Mechanically, though, how's the Dawn Brigade? This is a pretty all right stretch of the game, getting to go through what is basically a fast forwarded version of FE with most of the basic food groups hanging around (except cavaliers, poor Fiona). Part of the problem with the Dawn Brigade in gameplay, especially on higher difficulties, is that this accelerated pace is matched by rapidly increasing difficulty, to the point where there's very little point in raising too many characters other than Nolan and Jill because of an extreme dearth of EXP to go around to prepare yourselves adequately for the Daein-only content ahead. In addition to Ilyana being a cruel trap for someone not expecting her to go wandering off and the almost excessive amount of high-levelled characters to handle Endgame for you and then leave with their EXP gone to waste, there's a non-zero chance you're going to have a hell of a time when we come back to this cast. Radiant Dawn has a reputation for not pulling it's punches: 90% of them are because of the Dawn Brigade. As someone who sticks to Easy, though, it's much more tolerable.

RD Part 1 Endgame Battle: Soldier of stone

We're also going to bring Rafiel and the Black Knight to this mission. Rafiel is going to actually use his galdrar, but not in a tactically useful way, just to make things more convenient for me later. The Black Knight being deployed in this mission is useful for... other reasons.

Jarod has exchanged his Steel Greatlance for a Short Spear, but has not changed his stats.

There are two priests, both with Physic staves. Say hello to this one, by the way. I'm going to be seeing plenty of him.

...Wow, only 1:2 ratio on this screen? There are a few reinforcements, but that's close. Well, OK, we have eight women, three of whom I would rather not be attacking.

RD Part 1 Endgame Preparations: Coming to a figurehead

And a face scar to match the rest of them. Well, a helmet scar.

"The blood-stained right hand". I guess that's true, but it's not a particularly obvious connection.

Because Micaiah spared Jarod in the first place.

Jarod decides to spite Micaiah at all odds.

Oh, this gets so funny later. Still horrifying from a general perspective, of course- not because it's someone from Begnion, but because he's just going completely rogue.

Very Rhea of you. Imagine destroying the lives of the citizens in your capital building just to spite your enemy.

At least this is less destructive than fire.

But still... those are our families in there.

Well, not lost for words, we have words to say.

"Endgame", that's how you know this will be the final Daein map, no more surprises. I suppose a first-time player doesn't know the game will be using this, so they don't expect the fakeouts to be fake.

RD Chapter 1-9: Fire Emblem Warriors Zero

For duty and honour!

There are some rumours that The Grapevine has Izuka covered for.

What kind of priestess?

A promise they have been without for years.

...Hopefully they didn't die.

RD Chapter 1-8: Drain the swamp

The former is going to help us, the player, the latter is just for the plot team.

Ooh, we got to Talrega after all. And most of Izuka's other places, presumably.

And we snowball our way through the rest of the camps.

We can take Nevassa before long! Yes, they did just yadda yadda "the filler maps of an FE game".

We're coming, Jarod.

The meaning behind this title doesn't explain itself, but it should become clear before long.

RD Chapter 1-7: Liberation Army

Daein will stand by no longer.

Yeah, Jarod is still a bigger army no matter how many victories we have.

And they're getting bigger. That "blank check" seems to have been paid for by Daein and not Begnion, too.

People are lining up outside the door to join our army, but most of them are people who Begnion massively outclasses.

No offense, but we need real soldiers to fully match their might.

...If nothing else, I guess the gruelling labour is keeping their muscles in shape?

It is time for the gathering of Daein!
