RD Part 1 Endgame Battle: Soldier of stone

We're also going to bring Rafiel and the Black Knight to this mission. Rafiel is going to actually use his galdrar, but not in a tactically useful way, just to make things more convenient for me later. The Black Knight being deployed in this mission is useful for... other reasons.

Jarod has exchanged his Steel Greatlance for a Short Spear, but has not changed his stats.

There are two priests, both with Physic staves. Say hello to this one, by the way. I'm going to be seeing plenty of him.

...Wow, only 1:2 ratio on this screen? There are a few reinforcements, but that's close. Well, OK, we have eight women, three of whom I would rather not be attacking.

And off we go. Laura can't double this guy, but I'm OK with that.

...You mean I not only have to hit this 22% hit, but get a good level off of it? I really should've got that level in 1-7.

...I'm fairly sure this was the first try, too.

Jill flies up to try and break past this guy. Odds aren't in my favour.

No luck. Nailah needs to shift on turn 1, and couldn't get up here to help.

And Meg can slowly start clanking her way up the non-ledge route to the top.

Ilyana gets boosts from Vika and Micaiah. Mostly they didn't have anything better to do.

Sothe's coming up here for looting.

Volug will be carrying Rafiel to the goal.

Thieves! Actual thieves, too- Sothe starts as a Rogue, so you never get one of those for yourself.

Let me in! Let me in!

Jill heads this direction, to deal with that fighter.

Nailah heads this one to deal with these guys, once she can get the Move to make it up there.

There's a general lack of ability to get up these gaps.

Imagine having ledge advantage and missing.

Reinforcements! We've gotta get the Black Knight out of there!

Micaiah eats a Vulnerary. She's in danger here.

Nailah jumps up here and... Shoves this guy.

I'll worry about killing him later. Now Jill is on the ledge... shame about not dealing with the Fighter, but this turned out better.

She's gotta work on that Res sometime.

Well, while he's here. A missed attack still counts for WEXP, so even if I don't hit, Ilyana gets what she wants out of this engagement.

She hit.

If it had to be two stats, it'd be those two.

This guy decided to have another go at Nailah, despite having other targets. I think Meg might be able to counterattack.

Yeah. Oops.

Ilyana takes her revenge. This won't be the last time a man takes a hit, but it's mostly because Jill not killing this guy was a change in plans.

Cards allow non-magic users to perform a (single) magic attack. There are three kinds, and the Reaper Card is the middle variety. The Dawn Brigade have no use for this, but there are two good uses for these in this run. Well, I say "good"...

Vika has reached her transformation TP, and now she can attack.

Here's the thief in battle. He is not going to actually be doing anything, but he's doing his best.

I think Fiona can eat this, so Laura feeds again.

More Speed means she's hopefully not going to be in the habit of this.

Meg is not going to be feeding kills to Fiona.

But she is going to actually become a better armour knight. I know, what a shock.

She also got hit by that Venin Axe. Renewal comes before Poison, incindentally, but Meg is about to be doing the Vika dance from 1-8.

This kill is ridiculous.

But it worked.

Jill decides to make this guy have a very bad day.

Nailah gives Vika a boost into enemy range. Jill could've moved up, but she would still be using the Hammer and that guy is a myrmidon.

The Black Knight shoots the breeze with Micaiah on the way up.

Micaiah has no concern for the Knight's chivalry.

Her?

The Black Knight avoids the question of who "her" is. I have a guess.

Micaiah: Pardon, Sir Knight. I wanted to thank you. Thank you for fighting beside us.
Black Knight: No thanks are needed. I do nothing more than fulfill my duty.
Micaiah: When our fighting is done… will you remain in Daein?
Black Knight: …
Micaiah: Never mind. It’s none of my business. It’s only… If you were here with us, we could take heart in–
Black Knight: I may… take leave of Daein.
Micaiah: Oh! But why?
Black Knight: More than this, I cannot say. Forgive me.

The game pulls a sneaky and has two Micaiah/Black Knight conversations based on who initiates. This one is rather interesting from the lore angle- the player knew they weren't keeping the Black Knight.

Micaiah gives some of her HP to Sothe. Fortunately, the only person dealing with the reinforcements in the back is Ilyana now.

Volug Drops Rafiel off here. This is where he's needed.

Try again without ledge disadvantage, losers.

Exact kill! For a laguz versus a soldier, not great.

I'll be taking this and not using it, because the nature of this map means Sothe can take his time looting.

Vika kills this guy, too. It's always funny to see who you use to kill a Killing weapon.

Especially when your solution turns into "crit the guy."

There's something exceptionally satisfying about Hammering armour.

Rafiel is going to Vigour Nailah while she stands on this tile. This isn't what I brought him for.

Fiona tries to hit this Priest. Didn't get lucky.

Nailah is trying to Glare this Priest. Her accuracy is... terrible!

Nailah's chances of landing a Glare are influenced by her Biorhythm, with -10% at Worst and +10% at Best. Since her base odds are so low anyway (Skill/2%, so 23%), that's a huge chunk of her chance. I could savescum a Glare, but I'd rather grind out her Biorhythm into something positive before doing that. I don't think Glare uses True Hit (I think True Hit is just for accuracy), but every % is precious.

Excellent!

Excellent!

Incredible! Ilyana is going to have a fun time in the second half of Tier 2. She can actually cap all of her stats, including Luck, with BEXP from here (well, OK, she can't cap Luck, she needs more Luck than she has Levels to gain). That would be wasteful of us, though.

Laura heals Meg while she can't climb the ledge. This is still good EXP, especially with Paragon.

Fiona pulls out her Bronze Lance and gets to stabbing.

Worked this time.

"...You are beating up the clergy."

"It helps!"

Jill gets a myrm reinforcement.

And stands up here to bait some mages with her Javelin.

Moving past the line that includes those gaps and the door summons these two armours with Hand Axes. They don't like to move, but totally can if tempted.

Another kill for Vika.

Another heal for Laura. They're getting to the interesting place!

"We're going to rock this priest's day!"

Fiona is staying here, stabbing this Priest over and over.

He can take it.

Dishing it back, though?

Jill got this nifty level up here. That's her Speed cap.

And dodging some scary spells all the same. Her Res is pretty bad right now, considering Jill's normally pretty good at it. I think wyverns being bad at Res kinda trumps that.

More playtime for Ilyana.

Hm... better. But I'll wait for a positive Biorhythm. (If your Rafiel is- somehow- level 15, he gets a galdr that allows him to set biorhythm to Best. I wish I had that.)

These exact kills are satisfying, but honestly, I kinda want her to land both hits of the double for WEXP.

Never mind.

Jill kills this guy from range to prepare for those units underneath her on the ledge.

And Laura opens this door with the universal lockpick- righteousness.

Sothe could reach that treasure from the west, but that would attract enemy attention, and in addition to being naughty, that would make dealing with that particular enemy more annoying than necessary.

Instead Meg gets to deal with him.

Thank goodness for ledges! Technically, that means a flier is getting a benefit from terrain.

Finally, an actual hit chance worth writing home about!

I'd make a Medusa joke, but I think Nailah would give me the evil eye for that!

Fiona can no longer damage this guy with her Bronze Lance and has to tech up to Iron.

Few points in Strength will iron that out.

Rafiel gives Fiona and Nailah an extra turn, and Nailah uses hers Shoving Laura. Rafiel will stick to Vigouring Fiona in order to have her get lots and lots of EXP from damaging that priest statue. I already have one archbishop baying for my blood...

Speed! Into the pile.

Laura is smiting her foes proper now!

And gets even smitier!

Although she's all capped on smitiness for the forseeable future.

Meg stands precisely here and throws her Javelin.

And then I get cold feet and take away one of the people that could attack Meg. I don't know how fine Meg would cut it if she took all four attacks here, but I deemed it too fine to risk.

Gets Jill some Strength, though.

And to make extra sure Meg survives, untransformed Vika attracts one of the Hand Axes.

This guy takes a swing at Jill and, fortunately, misses. This might be concerning, but...

No more Javelin, time to switch to an Axe!

Even if this guy had a Steel Greatlance and the same attack as his brother, Jill would've gotten an "extra point of defence" from WTA. I think, if that did happen, that would be the funniest strategy from weapon breaking I've ever used.

So of course this guy goes for Vika. Now that Vika has S Strike, she can do quite a bit of damage on the kicks.

Well, if she hits. Either way, I win, though.

Not on this screen. Dammit, Vika, you don't have the legroom for this!

Just because Jarod is planning on dying doesn't mean he's going to go down without the fight of his life.

He will kill us or die trying. He'll die even if he manages it, but success is better than failure.

He actually managed a hit, at least. That helps him.

This is his actual boss theme, by the way. I'll be fighting him intermittedly, so it's not the most convenient to play along.

Rather than kill that Fighter, Ilyana moves over here to prepare for some unfortunate reinforcements.

Sothe and the Black Knight deploy the ellipses.

Sothe is coloured all sorts of shades of suspicious.

You and what stats?

The Black Knight delivers more or less that exact counterargument.

I don't see that happening. No offence, Sothe.

Uh... the obvious?

Well, we picked up one of these. Unlock gives +3 Spd and +1 Def while equipped, and can be used to open doors at one range, for some reason. I guess it's 17 EXP per cast, but in addition to the obvious problems with it, there just... aren't a lot of doors in this game.

Cutting it fine, Meg.

Go you.

Laura fixes that right up.

And Vika uses an Herb preparing for some more kicks.

Nailah Shoves this Priest futher away from the knights. I think this would tamper with Physic if no one involved moved.

Volug's going to carry the Black Knight around.

That was unfortunate. Ilyana got hit.

One of the Knights moved! The other one's happy to attack Laura.

Fair's fair, it's still funny when ours counterattack with the things. Swinging staves around as counterattacks somehow counts as WEXP too. Not that Laura is too concerned about her Staff rank.

So yeah, these two guys moved so Physic could happen.

Ilyana climbs up and readiers herself for combat with those two Venin Axe Fighters on reinforcement, but with all the loot she's supposed to hold, there's no room in her inventory for a Vulnerary! And Micaiah can't Sacrifice some HP for her, she's out of spare HP.

Fiona gets this level while I'm pontificating for enough Strength to hit the priest statue with her Bronze Lance, and caps Res too.

Nailah comes to the rescue! She reverts to make herself a more tempting target- and hopefully one that can't oneround, tempting someone to go for her!

Jill gets this kill.

You're supposed to be the dodgy wyvern!

Jill lines up in front of Jarod to free her homeland, and Laura heals her.

...Tch.

I put Vika here to try and block this guy from hitting Laura, but I forgot about the ledge advantage.

Ilyana takes on one of these guys. It makes my odds all the better.

And thankfully, the other one has noticed Nailah.

...Nailah doubles untransformed. Imagine outclassing the enemies so thoroughly that they're hopeless against you when you have half your stats.

That kill got her 14 EXP. If she was transformed, it would be 1, but it still wasn't much.

Laura got hit by Jarod. Not great when there's another guy who has ledge advantage nearby.

Also not the best.

At least this guy was a coward. Yes, he's still using Physic in melee. They have Heal staves, but I'm not sure how one gets them to use those instead.

Vantage scroll! Vantage is a Speed% proc in this game now, so it's kinda meh in this game. At least it's a 10 Capacity skill.

All right, this time, let's hit the priest.

Can't even do that one right.

How can you take this guy seriously when he does twirls like this? Halberdiers normally jump around like this.

Reinforcing the essentials.

Jarod dies proud of how he spent his life, because at least it was his own.

Jarod continues to be cryptically concerned about Daein's chances of reformation. Well, he was right the first time...

Jarod: So it’s you… little girl.
Micaiah: General Jarod, the battle is over. Surely you can see it. You never believed Daein could do it did you? But here you stand, broken, defeated by my countrymen and friends.
Jarod: Have I really, I wonder? Didn’t I tell you? With you dead, there is no “Liberation Army.” This is my golden opportunity… One blow is all it takes to turn defeat to victory. Such a lovely thought.
Micaiah: I will not lose to you. More importantly, the people of Daein will not lose to you!

Micaiah's is pretty plain.

Jarod: That face…I remember you. The kid who’s always with that little wench.
Sothe: Sothe, of the Dawn Brigade.
Jarod: The Dawn Brigade, hm? Oh, how I despise your ilk. The thought of draining the life from your body… It makes me tingle all over.
Sothe: Ditto.

I love Sothe's quiet "Ditto". Please do not talk about your tingles.

Jarod: Well well well. Look what we have here. The loathsome phantom of old Daein… Why in blazes are you here? What inspired you to slooooowly clank your way up out of your grave?
Black Knight: My purpose is not for you to know.
Jarod: Oh. I feel so rejected. Must I crack that helm open and ask your ugly, naked face directly!? I have to take vengeance for Alder’s death, after all!
Black Knight: This is how you meet your death? Sad. Come at me then, and join your friend.

The Black Knight gets another boast.

Jarod: A heron? One of you survived? How sad. On the plus side, if I take you back home, the money will set me up for life!

Of course he's a slaver. You saw how he treated the women.

Jarod: You’re one aren’t you?  One of those odd sub-humans that witch brought… You’ll make a nice rug!

And then there's this.

Let's worry about finishing up the rest of the map.

Vika goes for attracting more attention.

She really doesn't care about this Hand Axe.

Now we get rid of this guy!

And more Javelin throwing. Really upping these Lance Ranks.

As seen.

Who. Keeps. A COIN? In. A chest?

More Strength. Fiona is using Micaiah's Support, so it's good to make sure she can do one damage even if Micaiah moves over to the Objective.

Parity is now a Command Skill, so it can only be used on Player Phase. Despite this, that probably makes it more useful than its PoR incarnation, since you want to be using bonuses more often than you want to negate them.

At least it's Speed this time.

Ilyana made it up to the rest of the party, and Sothe switches some more interesting items into her inventory than Wind and Fire.

Fiona's getting to work boosting back up.

And even gets herself a promotion!

As usual, switching up the horse.

An important thing to keep in mind is that, when you hit enough Strength to do 6 damage to the priest statue, you can no longer use Rafiel to grind. At least +1 Str means you don't have to worry about a massive +2 or +3 ruining your efforts.

Paladins can only use one weapon type still.

...And one last level for the road ahead.

That would be because we're out of Bronze Lances. I could use the Iron Lance, but honestly, I'm fine where I am. It'll be risky, but I think we can make do in her next mission. Especially if Micaiah can get B Support.

Off we go!

And Daein has thrown off the shackles of the Imperial Occupation Army!

"And... a random priest, a black hole in teenage girl shape, a cowgirl looking for her husband, a few laguz and our finest wyvern knight."

Micaiah's happy to acknowledge the team effort.

I wonder... has Pelleas really learned the lesson we started this mission teaching? I mean, sure, Micaiah lent a lot of effort, but has he forgotten that's no thanks to him?

You call this gratitude? Micaiah needs a vacation.

Micaiah accepts with grace.

And... you're going to do that as supreme commander of the armies... how? What does Fire Emblem think supreme commanders do?

Pelleas: "I need a volunteer to hold the knighting sword."

Sothe: "...Please tell me you can lift the thing."

Both of them: "Please don't let the Daein people try to usurp Pelleas and promote Micaiah higher."

Micaiah gets her plot promotion! And about time too.

A blue robe. Well, I still like it better than base, but neither design really personally sings to me.

+3 Def, this is a pretty good deal for Micaiah. Also her new sprite is cool too.

How many people are in this room, and how many are men?

I'm holding you to that.

Micaiah:
…………
Pelleas:
これで終わりだ。
Micaiah:
……なんだか、変な感じです。
Pelleas:
よく似合ってるよ。

(Micaiah turns to Sothe)

Micaiah:
本当に?
Sothe:
………まあな…
Micaiah:
…なんなの その反応は?
Pelleas:
めずらしいね…
サザが照れるなんて。
Sothe:
俺は別に…っ!
Micaiah:
照れてるの?
Sothe:
違…っ!
俺、もう行くからな!
Pelleas:
初めて見たよ、彼のあんな表情。
Micaiah:
意外に子供っぽいんですよ。
体は大きいですけど。
Pelleas:
………いいな。
Micaiah:
なにがですか?
Pelleas:
僕には兄弟がいないから…
しっかり者のお姉さんのいる
サザがうらやましい。
Micaiah:
……………

A nice, long extra moment. Micaiah turns to Sothe and asks how she looks, and Sothe has to leave the room because he's too embarassed. Micaiah even says something to the extent of "my body is large". I was not expecting a moment like that and I don't want to say that this is a moment like that, but, well, goddammit, Sothe, keep it in your pants in front of Pelleas. (Not that Pelleas seems too clear on what happened- his last line is like "I envy Sothe because he has you for an older sister".)

And the kids are running around the slum streets!

Daein soldiers are hanging around with the citizens.

At least they found another use for this map.

Time for the coronation. Zihark, why do you have a sword?

Oh hey, Daniel, Jorge and Muston are here too.

Meg and Tauroneo flank Pelleas. They keep using Meg in formation with Generals, and it's so adorable if you're playing without using Meg (ie 99.99% of runs).

...Also, Meg is a Crimean, why are we letting her in here? This seems like a bad idea.

Meg gets in line. Tauroneo can't find the room.

Long live the King!

Some of our party will be leaving us now, though.

Before the feast, apparently. Poor Tormod.

...He tried to destroy Tormod's father. UNAPOLOGETICALLY.

Tormod's just uncomfortable in the Daein army in general.

Micaiah. Hasn't. Put. A Dent. In that.

Tormod's just going to remove himself from the situation rather than deal with it.

...I'll be honest, not completely sold on this as an apology.

ミカヤの前では、
みんな態度に出してなかったけど…
いない所では、結構、
露骨に避けたりしていた。

Sothe tells Micaiah that the Daein Army knows she would crack down on it and actively don't do it while she's looking.

At least he hangs around Sanaki. I don't think that girl has ever cried. Well, since she was five.

Meanwhile, Sothe doesn't know how to do feelings.

With that in mind, this almost feels like sass.

Especially when Sothe follows up with this.

Micaiah has some words to share with Muarim on his way out.

Muarim was just doing the normal thing. Although he is curious about how aware of her circumstances Micaiah is.

She's a main character in a JRPG. We will be finding out where she comes from. Quite frankly, the thing that impresses me is that we never actually learn anything about Micaiah's parents directly. With that said, when we do eventually come to talk about it, the fact we don't know what Micaiah's parents got up to causes a genuine plot hole I am personally really bothered by.

I also want to know who this woman is and why she raised Micaiah. This isn't because the identity of this woman is the key to any mysteries, I'm just curious.

This is a rather neat CG of Micaiah's Brand. Not sure how sold I am on her face, though.

At the very least, beorc can't spot Branded.

At least her guardian left her prepared.

Micaiah is only 23. Not "looks 23", is 23. I suppose she could always be slightly older, but, still. She's not that old.

And yet you agreed anyway.

Yes. Sothe. He'll help.

I'm not sure how much Tormod is helping Muarim other than cheerleading, but it's been real good cheerleading.

Vikar reminds Tormod and Muarim that they have to leave sometime.

She was the one that actually contributed!

I wonder if Vika knows this from experience.

...And all Micaiah needs to do is insist. I think Vika just wanted to go home.

Nailah and Rafiel will also be parting ways.

Yeah, two birds with one stone.

Are you doubting Tormod's ability to run around undetected?

"I have to go now. My husband needs me."

Better for all of you, at least.

Better to rip the bandaid off, at least.

Following the way the wind blows.

And Micaiah starts crying into Rafiel. They even have an animation for it.

So long, and thanks for all the help!

...Wait, did I ever get the Olivi Grass I gave Vika back? Hold on, I need that later-

Doggo bark!

No, he does not come over with that Olivi Grass, but it would be really funny...

Sounds like a Nailah thing to do.

Volug howls affirmation.

Sothe doesn't like Yune?

Yune doesn't like him, either. And some people think Yune is supposed to be an evil-detecting bird.

What former grandeur, Ashnard or before him?

With the powers of a light sage, a thief and a dog combined... Daein is doomed.

And with that, Part 1 is complete. At this point, if you're playing the INT version, a short "Still to come" movie will play, as if this was a video game released in multiple pieces. They're rather spoilery and I won't be showing them, but I will be substituting my own little "still to come" narrations.

As Daein brings itself into a new age of prosperity, Crimea teeters on the edge of calamity. Queen Elincia must step to the plate and prove herself fit for the throne, or face the upheaval of her homeland.

If I got a turn bonus for that, I swear to the goddess-

Next time: A battle that might have been added just for the actual trailers.
