RD Chapter 3-6: Bogged down

"Goldoa is neutral" being an axiom of the world.

"It's been eleven chapters, I thought you could use the reminder."

Clearly not universal, considering these shenanigans.

She regrets not writing a "free to withdraw at any time" clause into her contract.

You guys have a... long way to go before you recover socially from PoR.

"Those other two countries are in a war, there is literally no reason for us to care."

For reasons. I'm sure we'll become very acquainted with those reasons in time.

Not found in this chapter: a reason to fight.

Well, that part was quick.

As said by literally everyone in every forum ever.

Micaiah, reiterating that part isn't an explanation. Sothe wants reasons.

Remember that whole war we fought with Begnion in Part 1? You know, the... entirety of Part 1?

Micaiah has a lot of faith in Pelleas to be doing the right thing.

...He did that often before? I guess you know more of him than I do.

でも、あの方は……
来た時も突然だったから……
イズカ殿は問題の多い方だったけど、
ペレアス様の即位を
とても喜んでいたのに…どうして……

Micaiah has noticed that Izuka's sudden departure is very strange for someone ecstatic to have Pelleas coronated.

Sothe points out that this comment was a complete non-sequitir.

...The Daein soldiers are doing what? My sympathy for Daein is at an all-time low, and I'm counting PoR in that.

Sothe is having a lot of doubts in this entire operation.

Micaiah, Sothe doesn't want to hear the general of Daein's opinion. He wants to hear Micaiah's.

At least Micaiah hasn't changed.

Micaiah, this is a bad thing.

So... you're going to help them persecute the laguz...

There is no such thing as "Just Following Orders".

Micaiah, I feel like Sothe has a lot more reason to be concerned by this whole operation than "Ike is fighting for the other side". Although that part is very concerning on a perfectly practical level.

Micaiah:
……サザまで、わたしに
付き合う必要はないのよ?
ラグズ連合軍には
ベオクの傭兵部隊がいると聞いてる。
それって……
サザがいつも話してた
グレイル傭兵団じゃない?
Sothe:
その可能性は高い…
いや、きっとそうだろうな。

Micaiah and Sothe know that the Laguz Alliance is being assisted by a beorc mercenary company, but do not know it is the Greil Mercenaries. They strongly suspect, and Sothe answers Micaiah's questions assuming the hypothetical is true anyway.

Sothe's loyalty changes for no insanity.

Go compare Jarod's stats to Nephenee's. The Dawn Brigade is pooped.

If nothing else, if we can get Daein out of this mess...

...What do you mean, Micaiah/Fiona B isn't available?

At least I can pack this. Some Avoid, I guess.

Five base conversations today! Well, it may be worth noting that the three with Edward, Leonardo and Nolan, and their respective rewards, are exclusive to the INT versions.

The first one with Sothe is... honestly a bit of an excuse to give out a freebie.

Well, in JP. For us, we might wind up never using it.

Yay? Can any of us even use it?

Micaiah has a new treasure for Jill.

Jill exercising that "free thinking" she learned from Mist.

After PoR, "blindly following a king down a mad path" is not how Jill wanted to spend her time in the army. She has people to look after!

They really hammer home how dumb this is. Whether they're entirely aware of why is another matter.

Yes. This. This, so much. There are a lot of Camuses I'd like to point this at.

This is nice, though. Just stick it on Jill and forget, in all honesty. Whether she needs it is another matter. Good for emergencies.

So what prizes has the international version dipped into the sack for?

Special weapons. Special weapons with interesting Irish names. "Random mythology weapons" were honestly kind of at a premium in Tellius.

Edward: "It's said to be so sharp you can cut yourself just by looking at it."

Micaiah: "Then stop looking at it."

Already he's bonded to it. We're never taking this thing away from him.

Micaiah tries to tell Edward "I am here against my will".

Edward completely lets it slip by.

He's on Team Micaiah, for whatever that's worth.

At least the Dawn Brigade has faith in Micaiah still.

...Oh, he just wanted to get the sword.

Caladbolg is 15/85/5, which puts it at just shy of the Might of a Silver Blade with the accuracy of a Steel Sword. It has 40 uses and, while equipped, gives Edward +8 Luck. I honestly find Edward grows like a Wyvern Knight, so if you can get him off the ground, this sword pays out like mad.

Leonardo gets this word salad of a weapon. I'm told it's pronounced "LOON-a-sah". What a waste of a perfectly good alphabet. Many LPers, both spoken and written, honestly consider "not having to continue to type/pronounce Lughnasadh" a boon to not raising Leo.

Not true, it is weaker than the Silver Longbow. And I think Daniel can Forge stronger Silver Bows.

Like Rolf's? Like Astrid's?

Leonardo takes receiving Lughnasadh to be a sign that he has to commit himself more strongly to Micaiah's cause.

Why bemoan the things one cannot change?

We'll see if you're still singing the same tune in a few chapters' time.

Lughnasadh is equivalent to Shinon's Bow in all three of its core stats, and happens to be lighter by 1 unit (Base Leo has enough Strength to handle Shinon's Bow). It has 40 uses and gives Leo a +5 Speed boost, making it essential for the boy who needs every point he can get. Depending on what other archers are turning out, Leo might wind up bringing Lughnasadh to Endgame- if he doesn't have to lean on it too hard in the upcoming maps.

Nolan recognises Tarvos without Micaiah telling him. I'd ask about the lore behind these weapons, but they're not in the JP version.

Nolan is a very literate person, and clearly fables are included in his collection.

I wonder quite a bit about the nature of "I always did like that man."

As opposed to Jill, who would swing it around like a madwoman? (No, we can't give Caladbolg to Meg either- honestly, the Luck would be overkill).

Nolan is the Dawn Brigadier who gives actual advice.

...Hey, wait, aren't you supposed to be the Dawn Brigade leader?

...Yeah, this. I suppose. See above about "Just Following Orders".

Nolan has a lot more concerned way of phrasing this. He's not loyal to Micaiah because... not sure why Edward's loyal, but Nolan wants what's best for his... niece, I guess.

Nolan is surprisingly wholesome for an adult hanging around a bunch of kids.

Tarvos packs 18/100/5, which matches the Silver Poleaxe in Might, making it the strongest weapon short of the SS Axe. That Hit is also the second-highest of all Axes behind the SS Axe- yes, this thing is more accurate than Bronze Axes. It gives Nolan +4 Def, to add a little extra bonus.

Caladbolg, Lughnasadh and Tarvos are not in the Japanese version, again, but that doesn't mean that they haven't made their way back into FE recursively. Caladbolg is an explicit Skill of Edward's in Fire Emblem Cipher, and depending on interpretation, one could argue that perhaps Leonardo brought Lughnasadh into his artwork? Part of the excitement for the Dawn Brigade in FEH (other than some characterisation) is whether Caladbolg, Lughnasadh and Tarvos will make a reappearance.

Ooh, good, Vika returned the Olivi Grasses to the convoy freely!

While I'm managing this, Volug's Wildheart is now removable, and thus off it comes. Up in the top-right corner, we can see the description and I guess it's time I mentioned a bit of a recurring myth about the Wildheart skill. In the American version, Wildheart's description states that it cuts experience in half, and as such, many players believe that Wildheart does have that effect, same as Blossom. It does not- "ability points" refer to transformation gains (ie- the fact that a halfshifted laguz gets a 1.5x to their stats instead of 2x). Laguz EXP is just that shit.

Also, herons can't halfshift, what is this madness?

Today's Bargains. I buy the Physic and the Torch, but pass on the rest of the expensive stuff. Tempting, yes, but Silvers are outclassed by Steel Heavies and I'm not that worried about stronger throwing weapons.

My Skill reassignment was a mess, so I'm just going to show them all off as an ending. Micaiah picked up Paragon, because she wants a firm EXP foundation early, and Cancel, because it was a 10 Capacity Skill. I don't think "situations in which Cancel meaningfully procs" are situations Micaiah wants to be in.

Jill keeps Celerity, and Canto means she doesn't get much space. Jill having area denial is so good.

Fiona gets Beastfoe, as poor-woman's-Paragon. Also because I'm worried about her damage output without. Beastfoe, incidentally, gives her triple Might on all her weapons when used on Beast laguz- but it only works on transformed beasts.

Laura gets Resolve, for her bulk issues, and Discipline, to get a meaningful Light rank.

And Meg keeps Renewal, because why not, and Vantage, so I don't have to watch her clank clank clank clank her way up to so many cats.

Nephenee was MVP last time.

So how are the laguz doing?

Ranulf is on edge, because the laguz are attempting a river crossing at night.

Skrimir is grumbling about his loss. He thanks Soren here, which helps him realise exactly who it is who is at fault for this. Himself.

Ranulf tells him to keep his chin up.

Skrimir seems really rankled. I don't think you'll be helping that for a while, though.

Honestly, Ranulf, Skrimir's bravery is the reason he lost the battle. I don't think that's the word you want to use for encouragement.

Lyre sniffed something out.

I think this scene is quietly pretty interesting from the perspective of pedagogy. Lyre is naturally talented with her nose, and Kysha leading this comment with "I don't smell anything" convinces Lyre to put down her thought.

Ranulf tries encouraging her, and gets a success out of it. This is a key thing to think about when teaching people- the little comments can make an impact just as much as the main lessons you're trying to teach.

I wonder what torches smell like as opposed to other kinds of fire. I suspect I'd know the answer if I knew how torches worked.

Kysha repeats that he's got no idea how the smell works.

Ranulf observes that the headwind is a clue that the beorc they're about to encounter are an ambush and not a pursuit. Give Lyre a little time under this guy and she'll be a first-rate scout.

上空を行く
天馬騎士、竜騎士には
細心の注意を払っていました。
河のあちら側に
敵はいないはずですよ!?

Kysha disbelieves the idea that there are enemies on the other side of the river because they were on top of watching the movements of the Falcos and Dragons of Begnion.

For now, though, we'd better try and solve the whole "impending ambush" problem.

Kysha has no control over Lyre. Lyre really needs a new commander.

Just look at how brightly your force is shining. Although I guess that's just the Vision mechanic.

Look at that one cat.

For the Dawn Brigade, you can bring everybody. If you cannot make a tangible defensive line out of Micaiah, Sothe, Edward, Leonardo, Nolan, Laura, Aran, Meg, Volug, Zihark, Jill and Fiona, you might just be in trouble.

Micaiah, Laura, Meg, Jill and Fiona is certainly a choice in defensive line. I also brought Zihark, for reasons.

Our map, for what it's worth. Again, the Daein Army the Partners are a part of is not commanded by Micaiah, although that matters less. We can't see Gallia's commander, and unfortunately never will.

This tutorial is a nice little warning of what's in store now that the Laguz Alliance and the Daein Army are in direct opposition.

Micaiah opens hostilities with a Torch Staff. It might've had more of an impact if I showed off what I actually spotted.

I also send the Daein yellows back here. This map ends when 36 enemies die, and I would really like all of those kills to go to my characters.

To start off, Jill breaks her one last Javelin use on this guy. Wow, that is a lot of guys.

Jill knows what to bring.

Oh no! Anyway.

Fiona needed to use her Silver. Not a great sign.

I really should've gone for more Strength. Honestly, I think even this was a bit of an effort.

Again, we break out some tech to establish a foothold.

Meg picks up that Strength.

And Laura finishes up the cat, noticing she doesn't double.

Sothe digs around in the reeds and notices the last Brave weapon. Good to have.

Yep. Today's commander is Lethe. If Lethe is dead (through permadeath), she will be replaced by a generic cat laguz named Kezhda- or he would be generic, if not for the fact he's a black cat!

...I'd like to show his transformed image, but that doesn't seem to be lying around. He is four levels weaker than base Lethe and has -4 HP, +1 Str, -1 Mag, -1 Skill, -4 Luck, -4 Res.

Level 17 is also Lyre's base level, and honestly, Kezhda beats her. +3 Str, +1 Skill/Spd, +2 Def. -2 Luck/Res, though!

Lethe does not seem to be able to control the laguz.

Of course you are...

Well, that's just splendid. Lethe and Mordecai live up in that north-east part of the map, although once, I got them to drift to my position to ask why I was taking so long. They even have boss quotes and Talk conversations!

...This is as far as Fiona can go in the north? Maybe I should've sent these two east. Fiona still gets trapped on this starting island, but not this far away from the interesting combat.

I love how many characters get stonewalled by Jill's bloodlust here.

Yeah, they're cats, but...

...Dangit, Laura. Then again, you need the Speed. Mostly.

Jill needs a little more in the oomph department.

At least Jill dodged this hit.

...Even if this guy did too.

I have a defensive line, I swear.

It blocks this side.

Sothe is going to hide out with the yellow units now he's done digging up Brave Bows.

Fiona gives this guy some TP.

And Micaiah brings the Torch staff back out. She's getting 30 EXP and some serious Staff rank out of this. Not that she needed the latter (she starts with C Rank), but the more the better.

Nice and convenient for all the enemies to attack Fiona.

Less nice for no Strength. Speed and Defence is good.

Yay?

Ranulf asks why Lethe is still in this engagement at all.

From the sounds of it, I think the fact that they're retreating from their retreat is the last straw, and they just want to fight something already. Which, fair.

Ranulf wonders what kind of leader does what her soldiers want instead of the smart thing.

"Is it really a victory if you sacrifice your values for it?" I don't really feel like this is the time to plant your flag in the sand on that.

Ranulf decides he's OK with it as long as Lethe has thought it through.

He, on the other hand, has to go make sure Skrimir isn't getting himself killed. Although perhaps that might've been a tasteless choice in words...

……わかった。
…おまえが冷静な判断力を
失ってなかったようで安心したよ。

Ranulf sounds more like "glad you haven't lost your judgement."

Fiona, of course, can heal herself for an obscene amount of HP every turn. If she wasn't worried about dying in one turn, she'd be invincible.

This feels like overkill, but that's just every lance she has.

Yes, I moved so Micaiah is on the front line, what of it?

Micaiah hard at work on the usual stats and Speed.

Meg bonks this cat while the one in front is untransformed.

And Jill finishes the job on this guy in Support range of Laura.

For decent pickings.

I draw the line back here. There's a thicket north of Jill Laura wants.

...Can Laura not overkill untransformed laguz?

Anyway, time for the enemy phase. I suppose now is as good a time as any to mention the enemy phase theme for this map: The Devoted. Yes. That one. (The Enemy Phase chime is, of course, the Greil Mercenary one. The Laguz Alliance don't have their own dedicated chime- although perhaps, the "Greil Mercenary" chime is the Laguz Alliance once.)

Micaiah, knowing Ilyana stole her level in 3-5, steals her gimmick.

...She would have liked the level, though.

Laura gets her own turn against the beast tribes.

They go...

Well, she had Resolve, so this wasn't the worst outcome in the world if it hit, but still.

Fiona onerounds tigers now.

And dances around that Strength stat.

Oh, it's Lyre, too! I think they're just dumping character moments here because we're not likely to fight our friends- or even see them- this map.

...I hope they don't have Laguz Stones up there...

...So where did she turn up from? Well, presumably, the place she started the mission from.

Lyre was very worried about Lethe. Family comes before her need to prove herself.

And Lethe tells her now is not the time for this.

I love this family dynamic, even if it doesn't get much to it.

(Kezhda has alternate versions of both the Turn 1 and Turn 2 conversation, but will not have a Lyre scene.)

...Meanwhile, we got our own reinforcement!

The Black Knight does not answer this question.

Because he already knows or he doesn't care? Either is in character.

The Black Knight is the game's last saving throw for you if your Dawn Brigade has been slacking. You'll need him if you're in a "just let us survive" kind of position.

Micaiah really swoons for the Black Knight. Sothe Fiona is probably going to get a little jealous.

Of course we can't trust the Black Knight.

He doesn't have any conversations to worry about, although Jill and Zihark's Talks with Lethe and Mordecai aren't here.

Micaiah chips this laguz.

And picks up Defence.

The things I have to do for Fiona.

Str/Spd/Def is worth it.

Laura works on the next front.

And a bunch of great stats.

Jill gets to Converse with Laura.

And Hand Axes this kitty.

Meg gets to finish it.

Strength and Skill for Meg.

And also one of these! This is why I brought Zihark!

And I can also conveniently send this Wind Edge to the convoy and change her Equip. In hindsight, the correct play was to send something else back (perhaps the Steel Sword or Brom) and give this to Zihark, but at least I have a 1-use Wind Edge to weaken something with Meg.

Zihark picks up the Olivi Grass, and now he's set.

Jill attracts some attention.

As does Laura.

Well, I guess it's time to break this out.

LIGHT RANK!

Meg gets one of these annoying enemy phase clank clank clank clank clank.

And Fiona engages a tiger too.

...That was a large accuracy. Resolve is only +22 Avoid for Laura right now. 63.45% chance of losing?

Some extra Avoid and Skill helps.

Another use of Torch to try and attract attention, and...

Meg techs up to finish this guy off.

More power!

Also capped Avoid. Although right now, that's a really funny cap...

Aw, I've gotta two-hit?

I feel like Strength ought to have come after that.

Laura heals Jill, also self through passives.

Vantage, that means I don't have to walk as far!

...So no takers on Laura?

Ah well.

We can handle these guys.

Oh hey, Micaiah melee-ing a tiger.

She dodged.

And got more Defence.

Micaiah can pin two tigers at once, I don't get why Largo thought it was worth boasting about.

Speed!

More Speed! She used a Torch staff.

Also got this from the Staff.

So these three are at a bit of a standstill on how to act.

At least the beasts keep coming.

...Dangit, Meg.

Meg doubled this cat! With her Speed?

Finally, some more bait for Fiona.

Fiona is going to be really exciting.

I think I'm giving this to Laura.

Jill has gotten bored of waiting for these laguz to come for Fiona.

Meg is really beefing up, level 10 aside. I don't see her benefitting from BEXP, though. Her next caps are 3-6 away. If I could, though, it would be giving her Defence. If it didn't give Magic.

Jill is eating big tonight!

Strength, Skill, Defence, cheer!

...They all go up to Jill.

HP and Def for our bishop.

And of course Meg finds a tiger after her movement.

More Jill EXP! Jill is also looking on the happy side of plenty of her caps. As a matter of fact, she could cap everything if she got HP every level. She's not in the happy "BEXP now and cap everything" mode yet, though- especially since she needs that HP, and some of her other stats need a fairly high statcount.

Fiona is oneshotting cats.

This tiger is the one who's been hiding behind the reeds since the opening of the map, with max TP, but hasn't moved on Micaiah and Fiona.

More stats for Jill, then. She happens to be two points off two of her stats now. Maybe BEXP is the way to go...

Jill's still going?

Four more enemies, then...

...And Micaiah can't make a tiger one of them.

Laura picks this one.

Micaiah Torches for one hell of a level.

Jill stands here to trade away Micaiah's Torch, and picks up a kill.

So Micaiah can pick up the other one on Enemy Phase.

Yeah, welcome to Every Micaiah Ever. If you have never seen this level up on Micaiah, you are lying. Mine is impressive because I got the other stats too.

...With that said, still sub 30 HP? I'm going to be BEXPing Micaiah for HP- most people do it for Speed!

And Meg found the last kill.

I think there are supposed to be a lot of reinforcements for them, but the Fog kinda hides that.

Both sides, except our side which is deathless. Don't worry, that'll change.

That's high praise considering what I have to work with.

"The same commander we work under" doesn't apply in-universe, but man, it must suck to be on the receiving end of the player.

Good luck holding down Skrimir- he's clearly gotten past his self-doubt now.

Lethe:
ライ!?
おまえは
スクリミル将軍のそばに……
Ranulf:
だから来たんだよ。
Lethe:
           ……いるのか?

Ranulf:
ああ。
自分も戦うというのを、
周囲の奴らでやっと抑えている。

Ranulf has failed to restrain Skrimir- he's just off-screen, that's why Ranulf is here.

You mean to say that wasn't a real fight?

Time for another ceasefire! Maybe this one will stick this time!

Well, I mean, not the worst way of identifying us, but perhaps a better phrasing?

Trick question: None of us know either?

She is smol, what kind of general looks like Micaiah?

Daein continues to be overconfident for an army with five people, two of which are made of glass and a third which can't make any offensive progress.

Lethe is gung-ho as a red unit.

Well, this part is pretty true.

The Daein Army is, of course, the less impressive one.

Skrimir lets out a mighty roar in response to this line.

In neither of my runs did Sothe get to see a lion laguz in combat.

Much stronger.

Ranulf needles Sothe about the fact we have Ike.

This is all kinds of terrifying right now.

Yeah... the Laguz Alliance does not show mercy.

Sothe takes her advice. For now.

Hi, Tauroneo! Where were you? A level 14 General might come in handy for our army!

...Why does Tauroneo have to do this to come to the place Daein is so eager to fight in? Pelleas, how insane are you?

No.

Well, OK, we won the battle, but there's no way we can win the next one.

If only.

Does that sound possible?

Tauroneo is on team "no it does not."

No Turn Bonuses for headcount maps, for some reason. I don't know why they wouldn't.

Next time: Round 2.
