RD Chapter 3-10 Preparations: Sheathe your sword

...So they were parked out in the village until then? Presumably, Geoffrey spent the whole time glaring at Begnion, daring them to make another raid.

With Zelgius's assurance, this is now significantly less likely to end in the deaths of Crimean citizens.

Note: Less likely is not zero.

This rankles something fierce, but, well, sometimes...

Hopefully Elincia ordered them to withdraw first, because I don't think Valtome would wait for them to clear out.

We were supposed to have time to lick our wounds!

They were kinda counting on it.

This is very definitely one of those metaphorical things that I loosely understand the metaphor of.

I'm not sure who this Ertz force is, but the important people are in the Crimean army. I presume the Ertz guys are the Northern forces who did not go into Kauku.

Assuming the Ertz force is actually able to make it to the party. Let's assume they can and plan for the worst.

Tibarn notices that only the aerial forces in this eastern division will be of any threat whatsoever to the hawk tribe, and assumes Begnion will have included more of those types of units.

The Laguz Alliance don't know the details of 3-9, although this is a bit of an OoC guess on Elincia's part for Ranulf to make.

Skrimir is upset about the whole "betrayal of Gallia" thing. It's... kind of hard to explain how this isn't one of those.

That doesn't mean Ranulf isn't going to give it his best shot!

I think this is most player's reactions right now. "Suzerain" crops up relatively rarely in fiction, and the story itself has skimmed it thus far, but it is relatively important in understanding the pressure Crimea is under here.

Ranulf starts by acknowleding the difficulty here.

In fact, this is as far as he gets. Suzerainty is more or less where Crimea is free to do its own thing, but Begnion still has international authority over it. This is so foreign to modern law that suzerains are no longer considered compulsory on the part of the weaker power: soverignty is a matter of "you have it or you don't" and suzerain is a "de facto" (practical) state rather than "de jure" (legal).

One important point to keep in mind is that this situation was not "because" of Crimea's independence, it was presumably a state in which the first Crimea King negotiated his way into. Because, admittedly, most countries that declare full independence do so with military might, and Crimea explicitly did not.

I don't think this line coming out of Ike's mouth makes it any less true.

Ranulf:
Ike:
Skrimir:
Ranulf:

More detail on suzerainty. Skrimir notices that Gallia and the bird nations are not suzerains, and asks why. Ranulf cites the fact that the laguz nations separated while Begnion was still finding its feet. Which is... both wrong and dumb. Either suzerainty is different in Tellius to our world, or Ranulf really has no clue what he's talking about.

Skrimir declares an end to this line of thought. Just focus on the practicalities!

Ranulf points out he doesn't really agree with it himself. For good reason, honestly.

Skrimir is not of the same mind.

Caineghis calls off Skrimir's anger.

Caineghis has faith in Elincia. I'm not sure what he knows about Part 2, but before that point, this is a very "that makes one of us" assertion.

Suzerain or not, this is probably the case anyway. In fact, that was what happened.

Caineghis has gotten reports about the engagement between the Royal Knights and Begnion and come to his conclusion about Elincia's actions from that rather than character judgement.

You know how Nailah and Rafiel started this entire war? They haven't gone back home or anything. I'm not sure what they could be doing, but this is as good a place for them to hang out as any. Except for Nailah's duties as Queen, but presumably she covered those relatively indefinitely considering her plans.

In manner, yes.

Cain might be biased by how much he wants laguz-beorc peace. In regards to progress on this front, Elincia is excellent. It's the "everything else" that caused Part 2. Well, that, and Ludveck just genuinely seemed like the sort of guy that didn't want this. So, you know, to hell with him.

Rafiel has these doubts? It's more likely than you might think. Unlike Reyson and especially Leanne, he actually has memories from before the Serenes Massacre to draw from. Although I'd laugh if it turns out Hatari beorc just never turn out to be Kings. Sort of like what Lethe said about Begnion before slavery happened.

That's a lot of white. But yeah, slow change is better than no change. Just as long as that change is actually happening!

Rafiel:
[Reyson]:

Rafiel talks about his time in Daein, and how only a handful of people had the respect for laguz Caineghis is singing praises about.

Ike is another. I'm not sure who Reyson and Leanne call beyond that.

Skrimir is amazed. We don't really get to know much about his thoughts on beorc other than Begnions.

Point is, whatever Elincia's up to, it's not selling us out.

So what are we going to do with that information?

Well, the enemy has helpfully divided their combat strength.

Let's exploit that!

Even Caineghis knows to trust the Soren. I wonder how much of the story about the Little Strategist made it back to the King.

Zelgius is definitely in the northern party, so we can and should prepare for him. At least we know where he is.

The Hawk Tribe going east is a good idea, they have advantage on the mountains. Or match the advantage of the wyverns, if they sent those. Istvan was in the North, probably have those.

Tibarn and Ranulf themselves will be matching Zelgius, of course.

Skrimir wants to redeem himself for 3-4.

Tibarn:
Caineghis:
Skrimir:
Caineghis:
Skrimir:

Tibarn doesn't believe himself capable of handling the beast tribes as a military unit, and Caineghis suggests a beast tribe commander to assist him, which is what Skrimir is volunteering for. He calls Caineghis "Uncle", which is something that Caineghis reminds him to correct.

And Ranulf... agrees. I can certainly see what he's going for, to an extent. But I also don't really understand laguz military, so I'm just going to take him at his word.

Honestly, mate, I think we're going to need to keep an eye on you more than him.

Base time.

Marcia was the MVP, which was probably to be expected.

Oh hey, remember Giffca? And how he wasn't in that conversation with Caineghis earlier? So much for the Lion King's Shadow.

We know Giffca follows Caineghis around all the time, but what his day job is is a little less clear. I'm fairly sure "follow the King around looking mysterious" doesn't pay the bills. Or maybe it does...

I'm fairly sure the way Skrimir says this line could tell you a lot, but it's certainly not telling me much.

Yeah, from the lions' point of view, Skrimir getting out of there alive was miraculous and worth celebrating.

Skrimir has indeed grown, and he not only proves it to Giffca, he identifies when and why he should do so. This man might make a good King of his own yet.

So what does Giffca have to share?

Lost interest.

Skrimir decides to pass it on, despite his initial reaction. Sign of maturity?

Yep, sign of maturity. At least Skrimir's reasoning is sound.

At least this puts it in our inventory!

Skrimir's working on himself- he's not perfect, but he's good enough.

Right in the convoy, and maybe going on Lyre as a present.

Today's Bargains. That's a lot of Olivi Grass, who needs that much? I do buy the Daemon Card for Leanne, yes I know she already has one. 5 uses isn't a lot.

Nephenee gets a BEXP level. She has 3 stats capped, and it turns out some of the other characters also have a bit of this going on, but sure, Nephenee can get one.

I took both Daunt and Wildheart off Lyre, thinking her skill setup would be wildly different, but it turns out Provoke is a 10 Capacity Skill and she can carry all three. Yes, Provoke Lyre, what of it?

Mist is the only person who can use Discipline for benefit in this army. Let's cap her Sword rank!

Well, the odds of this working are against us, but useful skills are at a premium and I'd rather enemies attack her than Heather, so it kinda works.

This is how much Strike we need left to get SS. I think we can manage that.

This isn't permanent, since Nephenee has other goals, but it is more Avoid. Although perhaps Lethe might've worked just as well. +2 Avoid compared to Lethe Support.

Time to go into this battle we fancy having.

I think we're still on a single-digit number of references to this moment.

Also, Phoenicis soldiers are the worst of the laguz tribes about having headbands covering their eyes in their portraits. PoR cheated and removed the eyeballs of some of the "faceless" laguz, but this guy is wearing a blindfold, not a headband.

And there are the enemies. Look pretty reasonable, but we haven't seen the map design yet.

Crimea is here after all! Although that mountain face does not look like something they can just ride down. Bit of an odd position to stand.

That's where your mind went immediately? To be fair, they do look very much like they're on Begnion's side from this point of view, but Crimea has made no declaration either way.

Elincia appears to have flown into the middle of a soon-to-be active battlefield on her own. Good question.

Elincia even has a little bowing animation here. Not bad for a mounted unit.

Begnion also assumes Crimea has chosen to side with them, although in Begnion's case, that's ego.

Insulting your potential ally seems like a good idea.

Instead, Valtome decides... this is too late for Crimea to change their mind on taking Begnion's side and declares that, once the half-beasts are gone, he's going to Melior to take this lot on anyway? I think this guy needs a new brain.

Elincia's not here to side with them... or us. She's got her own agenda to support.

A laguz versus beorc war is a very bad way to go about this sort of thing. I'm not sure how much Elincia knows about our motives, but she's still not very fond of it.

Especially while we're fighting in Crimean turf! That much is just ridiculous!

Crimea is Neutral, and will remain such!

Valtome finds this so beneath him he barely registers it.

So what do you do with your time, Mr "Wearing a full complement of makeup to a battlefield"?

"After we've finished slaughtering the laguz" as if that's a remotely feasible objective.

Valtome:
Elincia:
Valtome:

Valtome mocks Elincia's ideal as the cause of the Daein invasion in PoR, and tells her to retreat to Melior if she doesn't want to fight. Valtome is somehow more of an asshole in these excerpts.

Our side was nice and polite and waited for Elincia. For as much as this situation has social etiquette.

Tibarn appreciates what Elincia is going for, but he's snapping mad at Begnion for the whole "genociding the herons" thing and isn't going to stand down that easily.

Elincia realises her gambit has failed.

And tries a new one.

You've gotta give her credit: she's committed to the whole "peaceful resolution" thing.

Crimea cannot do anything less. To allow this battle to take place would fly in the face of Crimea's right to sovereignty. And Elincia resorts to the one thing this bundle of testosterone is going to listen to.

Something so wild, so out of left field, that they have no choice but to stop and think about what they just witnessed.

This moment is very quietly powerful. If Tibarn wanted to, he could murder Elincia right now. And Elincia's response is to quietly stare at him. Almost daring him to try.

Tibarn can sure appreciate that. Yes, his mouth is kinda weird right now, I'm not entirely sure how Tibarn is supposed to animate for that laughter. I feel like the Fast text speed is kinda interfering with it.

Tibarn thought that Ike's style of thinking was Ike's alone, but it seems Elincia picked up the tricks.

Tibarn really hasn't seen much out of Elincia yet. He helped her reclaim her throne from Ashnard, but that was as much about killing Ashnard for him as it was helping Elincia. And now this is his impression of her.

Tibarn is happy to acquiesce to her demands.

Skrimir is of the same mind. To go to Begnion would mean going through Elincia, and he would never do that.

That's one side taken care of.

Yes, valid, Elincia hasn't solved this conflict, she's just kicked it out of Crimea.

And Tibarn flirts on the way out. Dude, she's a beorc, you don't want to do that.

Levail is confused about what to do now. This isn't in the instruction manual!

Zelgius is of the same mind as Skrimir.

I want you to ask yourself the same question. Put yourself in Elincia's shoes here. Do you think you could've stared Tibarn in the face without even reaching for Amiti?

Levail certainly couldn't.

And even Zelgius seems like that's not in his toolkit!

The thing Zelgius finds praiseworthy is not just Elincia's resolve in setting down Amiti, but Geoffrey's ability to hold position because of his trust in Elincia's plan.

And off the Begnions march, at their relatively different paces.

Valtome isn't moved by this display.

Although Zelgius is committed to this decision. Valtome's authority means nothing to him to Elincia's deed.

You and what army?

The Greil Mercenaries linger for a little while longer, wondering if they can sneak in a quick social call before going back to Gallia and planning their next move.

Titania and Ranulf seem to like the chances of that option.

...Well then. Valtome does have enough of an army to pull this off.

One thing about this decision is that this is Elincia's equivalent of Eirika giving the Sacred Stone to Lyon, Celica trusting Jedah's advice, Edelgard allying with the Agarthans, and so forth- a completely reasonable decision that has a wrinkle that turns the plan south for the Lord who makes it, and the general fanbase throws a great deal of criticism at the decision itself.

Purely coincidentally, I'm sure, all of these Lords are women.

Somehow, a war in which Crimea is completely neutral to has still wound up with us going to Elincia's aid.

The Royal Knights will be lending us a hand, of course, although this will be of questionable value.

"I- no, the senate" is a very interesting choice of words for this moment. Is Valtome plotting to coup the Senate, or is he just very hungry for Crimea in particular and doesn't want to share?

Our boss for the chapter. Loaded choice of words.

Oh hey, Ike totally does have some words for Elincia! I resolve to try and see them in action.

The Royal Knights are helping- our army will be the same as it has been thus far.

So then, let's prepare to save Elincia!
