DQXIS Act 3 Bonus: Best Friends Forever

This was the last thing I did before fighting Calasmos, and so Drustan's like "uh... go ahead?"

You get a choice of the five demons to fight, but the times aren't changed. Also, cameo appearances of the final two demons!

...TMI, no one wants to hear about my loins.

I didn't even use buffs or Brownie Boost or anything. Only a two turn boost over what I did before, though.

This is kind of a ridiculous option- not only are we undoing our marriage to Gemma, but it doesn't even feel right as its own option on this menu aesthetically.

For what it's worth, Drustan doesn't seem too judgemental.

There wasn't really another choice for the first partner. Erik was our first friend and still our closest one, and could benefit from a grounding friend.

...I guess you're talking about Erdwin? Serenica? ...Morcant?

Everyone heads to Cobblestone, even if they have their own homes and/or ambitions to live elsewhere.

Veronica: So this is where you and Erik are living, is it? I'd love to take a look around your house- I can only imagine the kind of mess you two are capable of making...
Jade: Do you and Erik really not have any problems living together, just the two of you?
I can't help but wonder if either of you ever bother to clean, or cook, or do the laundry...
Hendrik: I do struggle somewhat to imagine you and Erik sharing the same abode.
I have never found him to be anything other than companionable, of course, but making the leap to cohabitation is quite a different matter...
Serena: It's wonderful that you're living with Erik now- you two were always so close, after all.
I'm sure he'll be a big help around the house, too. He tends to notice the little things that other people might overlook.
Sylvando: Is it just me or does Erik seem to be enjoying himself a lot more lately?
If you ask me, darling, it's all because he's living with you- not that he'd ever admit that, of course!
Rab: Sounds like you and Erik are having a grand auld time living together. Almost makes me feel a wee bit left out...

Not entirely sure where Veronica and Jade are coming from in neither of us doing the housework. Erik isn't exactly a stranger to such business (and he's confirmed to be a good cook as a survival skill), and it's not like Erdward has any grounds for laziness on that front.

The EXP from Blind Hatred got Rab to level 99. It's a minor comic note that this'll be popping up every time for me. We'll just skip that.

The Underdigger actually recognises Erik from Octagonia. Not bad, although it wasn't quite as long ago for him as it was for us.

No, Showman.

Dunstan and Amber took some time to warm up to him, but it sounds like they've made up their minds.

Gemma, if you haven't married her, hangs around outside the church, like usual.

She's as warmly accepting of your choice in spouse as any other Cobblestone character.

Like you have room to talk, guy-who-tells-the-thieves-where-the-stuff-is.

Derk, since he's still an item shop, doesn't really have a lot of alternative dialogue for the companions, but he will pipe up if it's his old mate Erik.

He grew up in a land of permasnow and lived in the slums. Wasn't exactly hard.

I struggle to believe Erik has ever had a normal sleep schedule. He probably sleeps with one eye open- I don't trust his judgement on a good time to retire.

Everyone got to visit the Tor to collect Derk, and the Mister Vista quest (in both versions) brings them to the top. But I suppose there's value in seeing it alone with a friend.

Erik: You know, I've always liked Cobblestone. The air's fresh and there's plenty of nice stuff to look at. Speaking of which, why don't we take a stroll to the top of Cobblestone Tor? I've always wanted to check it out.

It's an iconic view they show to kids as a rite of passage. Why not make an event of it?

Erik: Come back to see where your adventure started, huh? You've been through a heck of a lot since then, but I guess you're never going to forget where it all began.

The smog encounter is still in place with the other party members, but they'll actually join you as full characters. This is your chance to use whatever your favourite move is with them.

Erik knows better than to think Erdward is ever going to lose at this point.

Erik: There isn't a monster in all of Erdrea that could beat Erik and the legendary Luminary! Come on, let's keep moving- I want to go all the way to the top of this tor.

It's still kinda weird to see Erik in his green cloak, after so long in the Wolf Wear.

...Not entirely wrong. I think the view from up here is more impressive, but that cliff had more detail on the area below.

There's seven people in the party all up, and yet somehow the game never manages to lose its grip on showing Erik as Erdward's closest companion. When it comes to Erik's connection, it's always that much more personal than, say, Sylv's.

...What a hero. Come a long way from doubting the jump way back when.

Also been working on staying on his feet. Between the Divide dance that he does and the Dodgy Character ability (as well as his own naturally high Dodge chance), Erik's certainly a master of knowing where to put his feet.

Apparently, the Great Land's Spirit didn't appreciate Erik's bravado.

Erdward, once again, lands a triumphant catch. He still hasn't learned how to grab more effectively than just the hand-hold.

We do actually have canon weights for Erik and Gemma, and Erik is in fact heavier (by 10 kilos, although considering how tiny Gemma is and how lanky Erik is, I doubt either is really a "heavy" person). Erdward himself outweighs both, so I can see how Erdward might win the battle with gravity here.

Erdward's always got Erik's back, magically or mundanely.

A neat callback to a line way back at the very start of the game here:

Now that Erik's got a new lease on life and Erdward's brand of heroism isn't as novel, he's gotten a new understanding on which member of this pairing is the more dynamic person to be around.

And considering all the good loot that's lying around Drustan's Labyrinth, that's saying something. If Erik could just steal a necklace that brings gold to one's fingertips...

...Don't you have a sister to take on this treasure hunt?

Erik's really cool to have around, but I kinda feel like he suffers a bit from not mentioning Mia here.

The line you get from talking to the party member isn't always a cutscene recap, but poor Erik got stuck with one.

Erik: You know, I've always liked Cobblestone. The air's fresh and there's plenty of nice stuff to look at. Settling down here might be just what I need. I've always been on the move, but it might be time for me to slow down and relax a little.

After that excitement?

Good call.

You know, I never really had the opportunity to do much cooking before I started living here. But now I'm taking every chance I get to hone my skills in the kitchen! Your mom's already taught me a bunch of great recipes. Next time, I'll rustle up something that'll knock your socks off!

Man, I still can't get over how peaceful this place is. I mean, there's no crime, no one fights... When I think of the way I used to live, it feels like a dream. Sometimes I even forget that I used to steal stuff for a living. I guess what I mean to say is that life here's pretty darned good!

Hey, I was just thinking about that stew we made on our first night here. That was quite something, right? It's not like we knew what we were doing- we just kept on throwing all those ingredients in. I panicked when it turned that weird green colour, but boy was it tasty!

We'll have to invite Derk round for dinner sometime- live it up like the good old days. The guy has hidden talents, you know- he has a great baritone, and his belly dancing has to be seen to be believed!

I've always loved looking up at the stars. Kinda takes me out of myself, you know. And the night sky in Cobblestone's really something. ...Hey, do you know what would be really cool? Camping up on the Tor. We could set up a tent, put a couple steaks on the fire and stare up at the night sky. Sounds good, right?

Hey, you know those kids who love splashing round in the water? Well, they thought it would be funny to try and soak me. Did nobody ever teach them to respect their elders? Were you like that when you were little? I mean, I'm not really complaining. Stuff like that keeps you young at heart, I guess.

Life here in Cobblestone's good, it really is. It's just... Hm. How can I put this...? ...Well, when you've seen the world like we have, it can sometimes feel a little... lacking in excitement, if you know what I mean. How about we head out into the wilderness for a while, maybe do some fishing in the mountains? Whoever catches the biggest one wins. Little trip like that might add a bit of excitement to our lives.

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure how us living together was going to work out. But it turns out it's a lot of fun. Who'd have guessed when I first met you in that stinking dungeon that things would turn out like this? I don't mean to sound cheesy, but I guess I was lucky to meet you.

Erdward/Erik is one of the more popular pairings of the party, despite the clear attempts to ship Erdward with both Gemma and Jade. With Sylvando being a huge magnet of "this is our queer character", it's somewhat impressive that Erik managed to carve out a niche as having his own queer representation- although it's not exactly like there are many male/male ships out there based on canon sexualities. Erik's bond, while clearly supposed to be evoking the platonic bonds of other male party members with their Heroes, is indeed much closer and much more personal, although supplemental material has also posited the equally valid interpretation that Erik is ace. He may trust Erdward more than anyone else in the party, but he has no interest in ever calling him or treating him as anything other than a best friend. Between his past and the sorts of bonds you form when you grow from that, "his best friend" is still an intimate position.

While Erik is the fan-favourite male partner, Jade is by far the favoirite female. Even in the original game, she managed to win more hearts than Gemma did- I imagine "being a party member" helped out plenty here.

Veronica: I've always admired Jade for her strength- not just physically, but emotionally as well. I've never seen her moan about anything. Mind you, I do wonder if she can keep going without at least one person to complain to. That person might have to be you, Erdward. Good luck with that...
Erik: Some of the bruises Jade gave me at the Masked Martial Arts tournament still haven't healed...
I'd be careful if I were you. Who knows what moves she'll unleash on you if you get on her bad side...
Hendrik: I trust that you will inform me should the two of you ever be in need of protection? I am more than prepared to assemble a cordon of guards that shall surround your home at all times- not so much as a mouse shall get through on our watch!
Serena: Whenever I was worried about something, Jade was always a willing listener. I have so many fond memories of the two of us staying up all night, talking and indulging in a sweet treat or two...
Hmm? What were we discussing? Oh, I can't tell you that! Tee hee!
Sylvando: Oh, Erdward! You and Jade are just the cutest couple!
Why don't we celebrate your new arrangement by having a party at your house sometime? I'll put on a fabulous show for you both!
Rab: It brings me such joy to see you and Jade living together, laddie- the royal families of Dundrasil and Heliodor united, at last!
Both of you mean so much to me, and I wish you all the happiness in the world.

Interesting reflections on Jade from the Octagonians here. It's important to keep in mind that, unlike Erik, thes two didn't fight in the tournament. Jade did help beat their Malicious versions in Act 3, but I suspect that doesn't count.

Dunstan being significantly less mercenary this time. Seems he has learned his lesson about that from the last time he thought we could get something out of Heliodor.

Not gonna lie, this is kind of adorable from both.

Him, less so.

A nice place to sit and fish for for a while.

Jade gets right to the point on this one.

Jade: Who'd have thought I'd end up living with the little baby boy I met so many years ago in Dundrasil...? Now, how about we go for a walk up Cobblestone Tor? It might make for a nice change of pace.

...Come to think of it, shouldn't this be visible from the balcony in Heliodor Castle? Not in any of the shots I can see, but I think they all tend to be at low angles.

Jade: Cobblestone Tor is very impressive, Erdward. The view from the top must be stunning. I bet you feel like you're on top of the world.

Bit of a bold assumption these two clouds want anything, but you never know what level of sentience monsters are working on.

I think the time of day that happens for the event is fixed per character- ie Jade will always be a night event.

Jade: You're certainly stronger than you were at the Masked Martial Arts tournament. I do wonder who would win if we fought each other now...? I don't really, of course. It'd be another foregone conclusion... On a more serious note, why don't we go up to the tor's peak? We've already come this far, after all.

Aside from Jade's established fear of heights, she has another reason to be cautious of this- Erdward fell off the cliff back when we first recruited Jade and she's still grappling with her insecurities about losing Erdward.

Going right for it, are we?

...Maybe we ought to back up a few paces, then?

...For... for a night view. It's not particularly great in this weather.

I'd like to remind you that the conceit of the opening sequence is that Jade knew him for a single day, at most. Jade has channelled a lot of her identity into Erdward.

Specifically, the baby Erdward Jade dropped in the river.

Of course this only happens for Jade. Hendrik, too, I think, but...

Should probably pay attention to that. Last time we got caught in the rain, we had to warm up by the fireplace.

They knew exactly what they were doing with this line.

Because I am fairly sure exercising in the rain is neither a good warmup exercise or a good method of staving off the perils of the circumstances.

Sure, whatever floats your boat. You guys know there's a sheltered tunnel right behind you, right?

Rain cleared up after that, at least. Wasn't a long shower.

Well, until the paperwork comes swarming in.

...It's just occurred to me I don't think either of these two have costumes for the cold. At least Jade didn't get stuck with the Scandalous Swimsuit.

Errant Party Chat:

Jade: I still remember how fragile you looked when I first met you as a baby. It's hard to believe that tiny thing turned into the man you are today. Your parents must be so proud, and for their sake, I promise I'll do everything I can to keep you safe. All you've got to do is stay with me, alright? I'll make sure you come to no harm.

Jade: Who'd have thought I'd end up living with the little baby boy I met so many years ago in Dundrasil...? Now listen, I may be a princess, but that doesn't mean I expect you to be stand-offish. Feel free to tell me whatever's on your mind, okay?

At least the clouds cleared up for that view. I imagine most people aren't confident enough with mountaineering for night-climbing.

I've been keeping a diary ever since I moved to Cobblestone. Having a stable home has given me time to reflect on everything we've been through. I was thinking that maybe you could do the same so we can compare notes. ...What's that? You want to read what I've written? Umm... no. I don't think I'm quite ready to share just yet.

I'm very happy to be living here in Cobblestone with you, but I am a little worried that my father might be a little lonely. Once we're settled in here, I'd like to invite him to pay us a visit if that's alright. I'm sure you won't mind him staying with us, will you?

I must say, I'm really enjoying the quiet life here in Cobblestone, but it would be nice to break a bit more of a sweat from time to time. If you ever feel like sparring, just let me know. I'm always ready for a dust-up!

Now that we're living together, I feel like I'm getting to know you a lot better. When we were on the road, I had no idea what kind of food you liked. I don't suppose it ever crossed my mind. Well, now that I do, I'm going to try and cook for you once in a while. If you have any requests, just let me know!

So... have you started keeping a diary like I suggested?
Erdward hands Jade a journal with some of his jottings in it.
You've been using it! Thanks, Erdward! I'm looking forward to reading what you've written! But, umm... maybe I'll save it for later.

Oh, I just wanted to apologise for... the incident the other day. I didn't mean to break the broom in half, I promise. I was just a little overenthusiastic. I think I need to work on my sweeping technique.

It's so nice being woken every morning by the sun pouring through the windows. Everything's just...more beautiful here- the light, the air, the water. But I suppose you grew up with all of this, so you're used to it, aren't you? That would explain why you sleep so late. You know it's not healthy to sleep that much, right? I'm going to start waking you up with a firm but gentle poke in the ribs, alright? It's for your own good.

I'm very happy with the way things have turned out, you know. Living with you is a lot of fun. I think we make a good team. I hope you're as happy as I am. And if you're not, just let me know what I can do to make things work.

Cute that they actually follow-up on the diary thing later.

Jade is an interesting partner for Erdward, in that in many ways, the two are natural partners... but in many other ways, the two aren't really romantically inclined to one another. Jade's emotional core is how she sees Erdward as a little brother, and the game never develops her beyond that point- at her heart, Jade's affection for Erdward is intended to be as appealing as it is to be a source of emotional tension for her. In the inverse, Jade, as a princess with close ties to Dundrasil, would have been a natural match, and there seems to be enough of a connection there for the two, but ultimately, whether you draw to this pairing depends a lot more on the more surface element components of the duo than the chemistry they draw.

Meanwhile, while we're talking about eternal companions that see us as family.

Veronica: I've lost count of how many shoulder massages I've given your grandad, Erdward... His shoulders were always so tense, and he was always so appreciative when I massaged them... I suppose that's going to be your job now, though, eh?
Erik: It's great to see you living with Rab, Erdward- grandfather and grandson, reunited under the same roof!
Just make sure you enjoy it while you can, okay? Family shouldn't be taken for granted.
Jade: Rab won't stop going on about how happy he is to have moved in with you. I bet you're happy too, aren't you? Let me give you one piece of advice, though, as someone who's spent a while travelling with him...
Don't let him have too much to drink- he'll snore like a lion and keep you up all night.
Hendrik: It has long been my desire to study martial arts under Lord Robert's tutelage...
As such, I must admit to feeling rather jealous. Now that you are living together, you can have him teach you whenever you wish...
Serena: It's so nice that you're able to live with your grandad again after spending so long apart.
I always feel blessed that I get to spend so much time with my sister- do be sure to treasure your time with Rab.
Sylvando: You probably don't know this, but your grandpappy gets lonely pretty easily. He just hides it well.
It's been happening a lot less often now he's moved in with you, though... You've really brightened up his life, darling!

The Octagonians recognise Rab from the tournament, too. I still feel kinda jilted by that one.

As a grandfather himself, I'm sure Dunstan really likes the idea of Gemma staying with him into his autumn years. Not that she's ever expressed an interest in anything else.

Most people have two grandfathers. At least Rab's been doing his job.

He seemed so pumped about rebuilding Dundrasil, too... I feel bad about phrasing it this way, but I'm glad he's adjusted his hopes.

Smart and worldly- two different but cohesive character traits.

Yeah, he's really taken to life here. Rab deserves a retirement.

I can believe Rab's got the energy for this sort of running around.

I think it's about time we had some proper grandfather/grandson bonding.

Rab: I haven't a bad word to say about anyone in this village, laddie. Ye fell on yer feet when ye washed up here, that's for sure! Now, if ye don't mind, there's something I'd like to do, just the two of us. Would you join me on a walk up Cobblestone Tor, laddie?

Rab: I heard all about that wee adventure ye had when ye climbed the Tor for yer coming of age ceremony. Ye saved Gemma's life, from what I'm told. Aye, it sounds like ye were a proper hero. I'm proud of ye laddie!

Disciples of Angri-La, sally forth!

Rab: I cannae believe ye're that same wee baby I used to hold in my arms so long ago. It truly fills me with pride to see the fine figure of a man ye've become. By the way, didn't ye say that ye went to the top of this tor when ye came of age? I wouldnae mind seeing the view with my own eyes, if that's alright with you, laddie.

One of these days I'm going to ask where he's been that we haven't.

...Yeah, I think those eyes are about the correct reaction to that turn of phrase and stroke of moustache.

...

...

I feel so grateful you had a daughter and not a son. Even then, I feel bad about Eleanor even still.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure what the idea was behind this part of the conversation from a writing perspective, and I don't entirely want to know. Sure, Rab is probably, at least partially, "the joke answer", but considering the context in which you acquire an eternal companionship, I don't think a joke answer was well-founded.

Not a word of this to Jade or Veronica. We still need the Luminary.

Fortunately for the game, Rab is willing to entertain a conversation on more tasteful grounds.

Rab starts to feel a little bit self-conscious about the fact that he has fallen far short on his grandfatherly duties compared to Chalky- we didn't know Chalky long as players, but the man was in Erdward's life for far longer than Rab was.

I've been calling him "granddad" casually this whole project, and while that's mostly in jest, I'd like to think the man is tickled at the thought.

This textbox somehow manages to undersell the moment.

I don't even have kids of my own yet, I'm a long way from that.

...Says the 70 year old to the 16 year old. Although I'm sure Yggdrasil will find a way.

We can't leave you unattended for five minutes, can't we?

Rab: I haven't a bad word to say about anyone in this village, laddie. Ye fell on yer feet when ye washed up here, that's for sure! And I'll tell ye who else has fallen on his feet: me! Living with their wee grandkid's every grandad's dream!

Hopefully for the second half of the conversation.

Ach, there's nothing quite like waking up here in Cobblestone and taking a breath of that fresh country air! It really sets ye up for the day! How about joining me for an early morning constitutional tomorrow, laddie? Ye're wasting the best part of the day lying about in bed like ye do.

So I heard from yer mother that you and Chalky were always sneaking off and going fishing when ye were a bairn. Well, if ever ye fancy a wee angle, I'm yer man. I'm no slouch with a rod, I tell ye!

Ye know something, laddie- you look a lot less anxious now we're back where ye grew up. It's not surprising, I suppose, surrounded by all this natural beauty. Anyway, it's good to see ye relax a little. Yer auld man was pretty highly strung himself, now I come to think about it. I remember before ye were born, he worked himself into a right auld lather trying to think of a name for ye.

I forgot to mention that Dunstan invited me to dinner the other day. Don't worry- ye're more than welcome to come too! He says he's going to serve us the best fish we'll ever eat, and I for one cannae wait! Aye, I have to say that life here in Cobblestone agrees with me something fierce!

Ye know, laddie, yer old pal Gemma really is a wee gem. The other day, she was good enough to give me a shoulder rub. I felt like a new man! Would it be too much to ask for my own grandson to rub my shoulders once in a while? Ye'd be making an auld man very happy...

Ever since disaster struck Dundrasil, I've had to fend for myself. After being waited on hand and foot all my life, I suddenly had no choice but to teach myself how to cook and wash my own socks and what have ye. So if ye've any worries about yer auld grandad pulling his weight, put them out of yer wee head. I know how to fold a sheet and whip up a tasty stew, don't you worry!

Cobblestone's the perfect place to catch up on yer reading. The only thing likely to disturb ye is the sound of wee bairns running about the place. But I cannae begrudge them their youthful high spirits. In fact, it takes me back to my own youth. I was full of beans too. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've changed a whole lot! I could still give those wee'uns a run for their money!

At the risk of sounding a wee bit soppy, laddie, I have to say that living here with ye like this is a dream come true for yer auld grandad. In fact, I'm thinking of taking a wee trip to yer parents' graves in Dundrasil to let them know how things have turned out. I know they'll be over the moon to hear about it.

Rab is such an interesting character, in part because of how little the game seems to care about that fact. He is undeniably the comic relief character, especially when Sylvando stops being "comic relief as job description" and starts going into his past, but he has his own dreams and ambitions despite his age. For every heartfelt speech about Rab's inner strength of character, there's a matching moment where he takes the wind out of his own sails, usually through the vector of his obsession with attractive women. There are a number of things this might say about the elderly, and while I'm not sure DQ thinks anything is amiss by having Rab behave this way, the fact remains that the two preceding elderly party members- Borya and Mervyn, from DQs 4 and 7 respectively- also have issues with decorum and understanding time and place. Thrice tends to make one raise an eyebrow.

Anyway, speaking of comic relief, how about the party member for whom "comic relief" is their day job?

Veronica: Sylvando's always been so cagey about his personal life that I can't help but wonder what he's like at home... Be sure to report back to me- in detail- whenever you have the chance!
Erik: Sylv's a man of the world, so he's got to be pretty handy around the house too, right?
And he's such an entertainer... You're going to be smiling at least twice as much as you used to!
Jade: How many times a day does Sylvando treat you to one of his shows, now that you're living together?
You know what, don't tell me. I'm jealous enough as it is...
Hendrik: It would appear that Sylvando is as comfortable in the domestic realm as he is on the battlefield. I cannot fathom how one man can become so multitalented...
I confess, I sometimes fantasise about being as capable around the house as he. What a life that would be...
Serena: Living with Sylvando must be ever so nice- he can turn his hand to just about anything!
Maybe it's for the best I don't live with him. Something tells me I'd end up having him do everything for me...
Rab: Ye'll be right as rain as long as ye're living with Sylvando, laddie!
I bet you two have some good fun and all, eh? I've a mind to ask ye to let me swap places with ye sometime...

...Sylv wasn't in your bracket, was he? It was rather explicit you two only fought us because of the seeding.

Eh. A surprising amount of his success comes back to his upbringing, yeah, but I'm not entirely sure that was a successful household. I can't speak highly of a family that ended in a decades-long separation, even if it was resolved peacefully.

The girls, meanwhile, focus on the entertainer side. Even if Sylv didn't have a darker side, does the man not deserve to clock out?

No fire eating in the house. I don't think Sylv will be allowed to perform that particular trick for a good long while here in Cobblestone.

This man grew up in a vacation resort. Granted, yeah, this sort of place is probably much more exciting and novel, but wow, how the environment you see as normal can change your perspective.

Sylvando: Oh, darling, everyone here is so lovely. I bet it's growing up in Cobblestone that made you such a nice boy. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing a little more of this village- why don't we take a walk to the top of Cobblestone Tor?

Sylvando: People around here are very proud of Cobblestone Tor, aren't they? One of the villagers I was chatting to told me it was the world's biggest monolith! I have no idea if that's true or not, but I'm just going to take him at his word. I mean, who am I to argue!?

...Well, I guess the show that kills you would probably be the most interesting thing you ever watched. Even if it was boredom. Because "a show so boring that it killed you" inspires more questions than "a show so boring I didn't remember a thing about what happened when I left the theatre".

Sylvando: I've known you were a gifted warrior from the second I met you, but honey, that was something else! Hey, why don't we go to the top of the Tor to celebrate our victory? I can't wait to take in the view!

Say what you will about Puerto Valor, but I don't think any part of it is high enough to compare, even if the ocean views were amazing.

There's something about the overland shot that seaviews just can't compare with.

Now it's time to see what Sylvando gets up to on his lonesome.

Dancing. Of course, not in the romantic sense- such a slow rhythm is anathema to the fast-moving Sylv.

And this is the main reason the devs would want to reset costumes for these cutscenes: Sylv makes use of the costume switch.

You'll forgive me if I can't quite translate dance to paper.

The emotional closure is tremendous on multiple counts.

Right now, the circus mostly fills that role, but a theater would probably provide... actually, what does a theatre do that the Gallopolis circus currently doesn't?

I'd say Erdward's silence is going to get in the way of that, but Sylvando's act employs very little dialogue.

...The contrast.

Glad someone thinks so.

Sylvando: Oh, darling, everyone here is so lovely. I bet it's growing up in Cobblestone that made you such a nice boy. Who knows, living here might help me grow into an even more fabulous performer as well!

...I don't exercise enough to know when you should rest and when you shouldn't, but between the dancing and the mountain climbing...

You know, honey, as a natural-born entertainer, I've lived most of my life on the road. I can't remember the last time I had anything you could call a fixed abode. I can't tell you how nice it is to have somewhere to come home to. It's like a safe haven after sailing on a stormy sea!

I've been thinking, honey- it might be nice if you and I teamed up and formed a dance revue to bring joy into the lives of the good people of Cobblestone. What do you say? We can work on some moves after dinner if you like. Ahh, living together is going to be a scream, I can just feel it!

Oh, darling, it completely slipped my mind- your pyjama bottoms had a big rip in them, so I grabbed my trusty needle and thread and sewed them up, good as new! I'm far too modest to talk about it, of course, but I'm a real whizz when it comes to needlework.

Oh, sweetie, I don't think I've ever felt this relaxed in my life! Spending time in Cobblestone is pure bliss! I've been sleeping like a baby. It's worked wonders for my complexion. When I looked at myself in the mirror this morning, I was so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed it was all I could do to stop myself from kissing my reflection!

You know what Cobblestone is missing, darling? A dedicated event space- I was thinking of a kind of cross between a circus tent and a theatre. Imagine! After all, the location is just perfect! I can see entertainers flocking here from around the world! Ahh, the sky's the limit, I'm telling you!

I do hope you enjoyed that little lunch box I prepared for you, darling. I don't know if you noticed, but I cut the lettuce leaves into little heart shapes, just for you! Next time, it's your turn! Work your magic in the kitchen and cook me up something that will knock my socks off! I'm expecting great things, you know!

I still can't quite believe how peaceful it is here. At night, you really can't hear a thing. I really feel at one with nature. I'm hoping all this healthy living and fresh air will give me inspiration for new ways to put smiles on people's faces!

Living together's a blast, isn't it, darling? Every day's better than the one before! But for a natural-born entertainer like me, it's not enough for me to be happy! I need to be putting smiles on people's faces- starting with yours!

Sylvando, the intentionally gay partner, is interesting to see in this setup, where no one is explicitly romantic and everyone is free to do their own thing. Can one say this is trying to bury the lede? Not really, but on the other hand, I can see an argument being made here, especialy compared to Gemma, Serena, Jade, and even Erik. Then again, I think this may be just as much about personal taste when it comes to the showman behaviour as opposed to it being a problem with Sylv. I prefer to leave quibbling about that to people who have more experience with male (and male/male) romance. I'll always take a woman anyways.

Speaking of, Serena's next. "Younger of Serenica's scions".

Veronica: Well? How is my baby sister doing these days? You know, we've always been together, ever since we were born. It's strange to think she's living with someone else now.
Erik: You and Serena, huh? Didn't see that one coming.
Well, one thing's for sure: you're gonna need to take the lead sometimes, otherwise nothing's going to get done.
Jade: Serena's quite the catch, Erdward. You must be pretty pleased with yourself.
She'll always be there for you, even when times are tough- so make sure you treat her properly, alright?
Hendrik: Serena may seem meek, but I can confidently say that she possesses the greatest fortitude in our group. Even when surrounded by chaos, she does not allow her wits to abandon her.
I suppose that is a different kind strength to that which I possess- perhaps I could stand to learn a thing or two from her.
Sylvando: What do you think, darling? Which tasty treats from Gondolia would make a good house-warming gift for Serena? I know she has a serious sweet tooth!
I'll tell you what! I'll just get one of everything, then as soon as world peace is declared: party at your place!
Rab: Well, laddie? How are things going with young Serena?
Listen, the important thing is that ye always treat each other with love and respect- not that I imagine that being a problem for the two of you, of course!

Serena's main characterisation is that she's kind, caring, domestic and romantic. And yeah, by all means, she'd make an excellent traditional wife, and she's probably doing a lot of legwork in any relationship.

All in all, it's hard not to love her.

I can buy it. You always were the dependable housewife type.

...Would it have killed them to mention anything else, at least?

I just love the contrast between Serena being admired as a domestic goddess, and then you come home and she looks almost like a traditional Hero in the Serenica garb. I'd say I should've put her in something else, but it could always have been worse- it could've been one of her "innocently sexy" outfits like the Dancer or the Little Devil.

...What time is it?

Serena: This really is a lovely village, and I'm so happy I was given the chance to live with you here. By the way, I've been meaning to ask you... Could we go for a walk up Cobblestone Tor together? I've wanted to visit ever since I first came here.

Serena: ‘Humble folk of Cobblestone, Great Land Spirit's hearth and home...’ That's how it goes, isn't it? I think it's just wonderful how much respect the people of Cobblestone have for the Spirit of the Land.

...The fact Serena's doubling up on these feels real bad.

Serena: It shouldn't really surprise me any more, but you really are quite the warrior, aren't you? I suppose I'll just have to do everything I can to support you from the sidelines... Actually, if you don't mind terribly, would you mind if we went up to the top of the Tor? The view must be amazing!

And there's Serena in her traditional outfit. I imagine this cutscene also forces her long hair, too.

Of course she gets the traditional setup. This is going to be one of those moments where she brings out her home cooking of Erdward's favourite meal, isn't it...

Wait, isn't Erdward's favourite meal stew?

Cliche or not, you cannot deny the sheer comedy of Serena pulling out a cauldron wider than she is out of nowhere.

And not only that, how to carry it up a mountain without Erdward being any the wiser. And also keep it at servable temperatures.

Amazing what changing the serving size does to this scene.

There are two kinds of female chefs in fiction like this: Really good ones, and really bad ones. A giant black cauldron pulled out of hammerspace more often leads to the bad variety, not helped by the fact we don't get a look in before we bite. Serena said she learned how to cook, and that means she actually knows how to cook.

Well, that depends on how much of it we ate. ...Do we have to bring what we didn't eat back down the mountain?

...Wouldn't I be the one to eat the results of your practice? Who was doing it before me, anyway? I guess the kids of Cobblestone have been getting a lot of extra meals.

Considering her ditzy nature, I wonder if this was something that actually happened (in-universe) when the twins first joined the party. Between Erik's cooking-for-survival and Veronica's no-nonsense general competence, it's easy to see Serena as the worst cook of the starting party.

It would've been nice to see that, but hey, this is a new cutscene to Definitive that only some players are going to see, establishing that early would probably come off as too mean-spirited to a character we've barely met.

I may just be reading too deep into Serena's romantic sensibilities, but this does kinda feel meta in regards to Serena's crippling lack of screentime. All her awesome moments always feel like they're over so fast...

So will I.

...

Sudden Act 2 memory. Out of everyone, Serena's the one who's most affected by Act 2, and the fact we get to see that side of her feels most fitting.

I wonder what she thought of that particular thought- I doubt she remembers ever receiving that promise. Erdward is implied to not have the full facts about Act 2 in the course of time travelling back, but it does feel weird that the party just gets left in the lurch. Especially here, of all places.

Awwww.

And then suddenly Erdwin and Serenica.

Awwwwwww.

Serena: I've served as your protector for quite some time, but now that we live together I have a rather different role... I promise I'll do my best to be a better cook and do my share of the housework! Tee hee! Here's to many happy years together, Erdward!

Serena: This really is a lovely village, and I'm so happy I was given the chance to live with you here. I know we can't truly relax until the Dark One is defeated, but let's try and share what's on our minds whenever we can- it's sure to help!

Umm, Erdward... There's something I've been meaning to ask you for the longest time... Well, it's... It's just... I want to know... Umm... ...I want to know what your secret is! How do you do it? How do you get your hair so shiny? You just have to tell me!

You know, Erdward, your grandfather Chalky really does have the kindest smile... What's that? How do I know? Why, because he's standing right over there! ...Hee hee! Not really! But I had you going for a moment, didn't I? Still, he really must have been a very lovely person- and it all rubbed off on you!

Sandy really is such a clever dog! The other day I was walking through the village when I tripped over my skirt. I was about to fall flat on my face when she came bounding over and helped me recover my balance! But thinking about it, Gemma is the loveliest owner a dog could ever have. No wonder Sandy grew to be so kind-hearted and clever.

Cobblestone is so nice and quiet- it's just perfect for playing the harp. The other day I got a little carried away and burst into song. Before I knew it, all the children from the village had gathered round, and were singing along! Oh, it was just so lovely! Maybe next time you can join in too, Erdward?

It was so kind of your mother to teach me how to make that delicious stew! I shall have to get practising- I know how much you like it! Oh, and I need to do some baking too! You're going to love my sticky toffee pudding, I just know it!

Oh, I'm just so happy! Here I am living in a wonderful village with the most wonderful person in the world! ...Oh, I hope I didn't embarrass you, Erdward! I'm sorry- I got a little overexcited!

Gemma's so very kind! She lent me a marvellous book- I was up ever so late last night reading it. Would you like to borrow it when I'm finished? It will be so nice to hear what you think about it. ...Ahh, life is so lovely and calm here in Cobblestone, isn't it? After all we've been through, it's like a dream come true!

I must admit, I was rather worried I might find it hard to fit in here in Cobblestone, but everyone has made me so, so welcome! They're all just so lovely and kind- they feel like family already! I'm at home here, I really am!

Of all the party members, Serena is very definitely the one that feels closest to a marriage. Erdwin/Serenica parallels the game loves aside, Serena adopts the traditional passive love interest role and gets very domestically heartfelt scenes with him. If the game were in the business of being choosy about which party members get a marriage and which don't, Serena would be the only one that would be a marriage without question. Unfortunately, this also shines a spotlight on Serena's narrative flaws- that passivity and inoffensiveness led her to be a party member that missed story relevance decisively, and Serena struggles to compete for attention as a result. Even among heterosexual Erdward shippers, the arguments for Gemma and Jade are so decisive that Serena occupies a very shallow niche- and that's without considering the element that Serena draws a great deal on her big sister.

How about Hendrik, then? Go from most traditional to least? I'm surprised Drustan doesn't really mention the Zwaardsrustian heritage thing.

Veronica: I've always wondered what Hendrik gets up to in his spare time... There's a lot I still don't know about him, but I wouldn't mind learning more. You'll share any interesting titbits you uncover, won't you, Erdward?
Erik: I've got to say, I really can't imagine living with Hendrik... Can the guy even cook?
Jade: Take it from me as someone who's known Hendrik for a long time- living with him won't be easy.
He's always been so stubborn about the strangest things. You're going to have your work cut out, Erdward...
Serena: I think it's wonderful how you and Hendrik have put aside your differences and moved in together.
Though I do wonder from time to time what exactly you two talk about...
Sylvando: Listen, honey, this is important: If Hendrik upsets you and you want some revenge, do exactly as I say... Hide a frog just behind the pillow on his bed- when he discovers it he'll jump sky-high, screaming all the way!
Oh, but you're far too nice to ever pull such a prank, aren't you, darling? Hee hee!
Rab: Well laddie, how's life with Hendrik treating ye? I bet ye're getting in plenty of sword practice.
Do let me know the next time ye decide to have a duel. I'm getting a wee bit rusty myself and wouldn't mind putting you boys through yer paces!

I like how it's the Showman who recognises Hendrik from the statue. The Underdigger apparently needs to stop spending so much time in that mask of his.

There's a certain air of nonchalantness about the circumstances of Cobblestone and Hendrik's interactions that just snuck right on by, didn't it?

Listen, mate, the destruction of his people and my literal dirty laundry are no comparison to make.

Now, my figurative dirty laundry...

At least Hendrik and Cobblestone setting their past aside is a nice way for Hendrik to get in some good relaxation.

"Clement", that's not a word I hear often. Surprised Hendrik of all characters is pulling out the loquaciousness, I never associated that with him.

Hendrik: It would be false to claim that I foresaw our current arrangement... But life is full of surprises- I would not have expected to take much pleasure in going on walks, either, and now I can think of little I enjoy more. If time permits, I should like to pay Cobblestone Tor a visit...

Hendrik: It seems that everyone in Cobblestone climbs the Tor when they come of age... The Heliodorian army also has its own rites of passage. I remember having to take on my first dracky. A most frightening experience. I am sure there are similar rituals wherever you go in the world. It is important to mark the moment when one leaves their childhood behind.

...I love the fact that Hendrik is the only party member who got dropped on Erdward's left. It's because he's at the front of the party in the Blind Hatred Fights, but...

Hendrik: Truly, you are a man of formidable strength- you have come on in leaps and bounds since the day you were cast into the castle dungeon. Now, let us proceed to the top of the Tor. Please do not ask why.

Hendrik's "default outfit" is the Heliodorian armour, rather than the tunic. I guess even the developers kinda prefer him in this. The artbook's group art uses the tunic, while Hendrik's dedicated pages use the armour.

I have many questions, but my first one is "what happened to my lightsaber?"

OK, seriously, the first question is "why is it suddenly raining?".

I can't help but notice Hendrik has the bigger sword.

This is the duel Erdward and Hendrik never had in Act 1, I take it.

Not that it's a duel the player gets to do. The player never fights Hendrik- we fought Sylv once and Jade and Rab twice each, but never Hendrik.

Ironically, the sun is more prominent now than it was in the duel.

Knights often speak another language to that of civilians. And when their flowery language is insufficent, it is the bladework they turn to for communication. A dying art, but it has always been possible to learn something of someone's personality from the way they handle a weapon. I'm not sure how well one goes about that when that weapon is coming at your head, though.

One of those things that doesn't really occur to you immediately: Hendrik, as he appears here, is his Act 1 self- he has had none of the development that occurs over the course of Act 2, and the turn from his pursuit through Act 1 and the fun sidequesty romp of Act 3 is rather abrupt when viewed from his perspective. If Serena had the biggest Act 2 shift, Hendrik is the one who is most affected by the little details. All of Hendrik's establishing character beats have to be gone through again.

This self-flagellation is matched by the earnestness at which Hendrik attempts to put his wrongs to right. He wronged Erdward and the people of Cobblestone, and so it is Erdward and the people of Cobblestone whom he dedicates himself to making amends with. The failure of self-flagellation is when you focus too heavily on the "self"- punish yourself more than you help those you wronged.

Erdward may have forgiven him, but the time has not yet come when Hendrik has forgiven himself.

And even then, I feel like you'd still give it your best shot.

Hendrik: It would be false to claim that I foresaw our current arrangement... But Cobblestone is now my home, and I swear to defend it and its people with my life. Never again shall tragedy strike this village.

Perhaps ease on the duels, though? The precipice kinda scares me, especially since it wouldn't be the first time a duel between us ended with Erdward falling off a cliff.

It is a difficult subject to broach, but I am somewhat concerned that my snoring may be disturbing your rest. If so, I can only apologise. I was often the butt of jokes and the subject of complaints from my fellow Heliodorian guards.

I have learnt many things about you since we began living together. I have been particularly impressed by your haircare regime. I have much to learn from you in this and many other respects, I am sure.

Living with you has been a great pleasure. I particularly enjoy having the opportunity to spar with you on a daily basis. I have learnt much from you, and feel that my swordsmanship has never been more polished. For that, I must thank you.

I believe that it is my turn to do the laundry. If you could put any clothes you want washed in the basket, I would appreciate it. ...But I am afraid there is something I should warn you of. I have always been very poor at folding. It is a deficiency I am afraid I have never quite managed to correct.

Ever since I was promoted to general, the more menial and mundane tasks have been taken care of by my underlings. It has been a long time since I partook in such day-to-day trivialities. But fear not- I shall not shirk my duties, nor quail in the face of grime or dust. I shall be as a shield, defending this house from the forces of filth!

My years in the royal guard mean that I am, of course, accustomed to communal living. ...But living with you is very different from barracking with my fellow soldiers. Every day brings new discoveries. For this, I am truly grateful.

There are few things I enjoy more than silent contemplation. The peace and quiet here in Cobblestone are blessings indeed. Perhaps you would care to accompany me to the top of the Tor sometime? It is the perfect spot for an afternoon of communing with nature.

I have no doubt that the people of Cobblestone had some reservations about a former general of Heliodor making his home in their village. But I have been heartened to see that they are kind enough not to dwell too heavily on the past. All are keenly focused on building a bright future instead. And I too shall play my part in this.

Hendrik is by no means a bad match for Erdward. But there is a bit of a sense that Hendrik's scene is mostly here because everyone else gets one, same as Rab. Hendrik does not have a close personal attachment to Erdward, like Erik, Rab and the girls, nor does he have strong expressions of homosexuality, like Sylv. Erdward and Hendrik are platonic friends, and they may even have a strong bond depending on your views of knighthood and how much of Act 2 seeps into the relationship, but it is difficult to see them as a "pair". When Erdward pairs with Jade, Hendrik is quick to propose his continued allegiance to both, and as much as this is a joke about how seriously he takes himself around Jade, this is a very accurate picture of Hendrik's connection to Erdward- a man Erdward can always count on, but not necessarily the man he's going to quarter with. There's a sizable fandom for Hendrik/Sylvando, and I feel like that's probably the way everyone involved would go. If the two can agree on where exactly they'll be spending their lifetime.

Our last pairing is with Veronica. I really like this one, although there's one annoying downside to it that there wasn't really an excuse for.

On the plus side, they finally put Veronica on a barrel to set her at eye level.

Erik: I've got to say, I never thought you'd choose to live with Veronica. I mean, you guys never struck me as getting along particularly well, but I guess they do say opposites attract- you might be a good match after all!
Jade: I can't help but feel that Veronica's become a little... softer lately. I wonder if that has anything to do with you?
Everyone does seem quite happy with this new arrangement, after all- even I'm on the verge of breaking into a smile!
Hendrik: I have nothing but respect and admiration for Veronica, and I am certain that you shall reside together in harmony for many years to come. Though I must say, her outraged response to Lord Robert's choice of... reading material suggests that you would do well to keep any such... publications of your own well hidden... Ahem...
Hmm? You have no such periodicals, you say? Yes, well... I suppose you are the Luminary, after all- I need not have worried.
Serena: I do hope Veronica isn't causing you too much trouble.
Be sure to let me know if she is- I'll do my best to get her to behave.
Sylvando: It's great that you've chosen Veronica to live with you, darling. You really couldn't hope for a better housemate! You must let me give you one piece of advice, though: don't forget to communicate.
After all, neither of you are mind readers, and you'll need to be there for each other when times get tough!
Rab: Ye've got yerself a bonnie lass there, laddie, even if she does have a habit of trying to do everything by herself sometimes. Mind you, maybe ye're not so different in that regard, eh? Aye, a right pair of peas in a pod you are.
Now remember, if you ever need help with anything, let us know. That's what family and friends are for, after all!

I'm not sure exactly which side is more to blame when it comes to that particular scuffle in Octagonia, although it's nice to see growth nonetheless. The Showman's a bit weird, though- does he know she's outwardly a little girl?

Apparently Veronica's found some fun with the tykes. Really embracing her child side there.

...You know, I wonder if she had a normal childhood, with all the studying she had to do to get that omnidisciplinary.

Everyone always remembers when she's grouchy...

I'd ask what time this is, but this is an RPG. People are at the stoves all the time and their meals don't overcook.

Veronica: Living with you is really not all that bad, you know. Don't ask me why, but I feel nice and relaxed when we're together. Now, how about we take a walk up Cobblestone Tor? I don't imagine we'll have too many chances to go when it's just the two of us...

Veronica: The carving here on Cobblestone Tor looks a lot like Yggdrasil if you look closely. In fact, there are huge images like that all over the world. I wonder how the Ancients managed to create them.

Funny she should phrase it that way...

They must've really ticked her off.

Veronica: You might not have much of a way with words, but you're a fierce little fighter, aren't you? Now, let's keep pushing on to the top of the Tor. I really want to see what the view's like!

...This was your idea.

Veronica is the only party member to acknowledge the fact that which eternal companion we have is decided by walking up to Drustan and picking one, but I feel this question also gets to tap into something deeper: the only reason Veronica is even alive right now is because we chose to save her at the cost of changing the course of history forever. You can't help but feel close to her.

I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

One of these days, the world will be cleared of the monster infestation...

Has anyone ever asked Erdward that one?

Veronica makes a strong argument.

...A very persuasive one.

In the Party Chat, Rab pointed out that both Erdward and Veronica have a bit of a habit of taking point and doing more than their fair share to make the wheels of the world keep spinning. A more than apt personality trait for an RPG protagonist, but one that requires tempering when translated to a more regular lifestyle.

We don't know how old the twins are, although considering Erdward just came of age at the start of the game and Veronica feels she has the right to walk into bars, Veronica is probably right to say that she's the older one.

Ronnie really gets the best scenes.

You're welcome.

And Erdward gets a well-deserved break.

I would never have it any other way.

There's still a Calasmos that needs knocking out of the sky.

Errant Party Chat:

Veronica: I bet you feel nice and safe with me by your side, don't you? Just leave everything to old Veronica and you won't put a foot wrong! Mind you, if I do get into a spot of bother- which I obviously never will- don't just stand around gawping. Step in and help!

Veronica: Living with you is really not all that bad, you know. Don't ask me why, but I feel nice and relaxed when we're together. Just don't go thinking that I'm going to take care of all the chores because you're the Luminary, alright? You'll be doing your fair share of cooking, cleaning and laundry, don't you worry about that!

...She was very enthusiastic when we got to the Tor, where is all this negativity about getting up there coming from?

People are so kind in Cobblestone. The other day, an old couple gave me a big bag of boiled sweets. I'll share them with you- if I don't end up eating them all myself, that is! I know I don't normally like being treated like a child, but I'm happy to make an exception when it comes to sweets!

It's funny, you never had all that much to say when we were all travelling around together, but now we're living with each other, you hardly ever shut up! Not that I'm complaining, you understand. I just never knew you had so much to say for yourself. I suppose when you live with someone, you can't help but learn a lot about them.

One thing we haven't really talked about is how we're going to divvy up the household chores. Well, you'll be happy to hear that I'm going to volunteer to do the sweeping. Well, I say that- I'm actually working on a spell to make the broom go over the whole house every morning by itself! Bet you're glad you decided to live with me!

Sandy's so adorable! I wish I'd had a dog like that when I was growing up. I'd love to use her big fluffy belly as a pillow! Do you think Gemma would mind?

You know, I was a little hurt that you didn't like that delicious home-made curry I cooked you the other day. Maybe it wasn't spicy enough for you? I put a couple of handfuls of chilli peppers in there, but maybe I should have added a few more? Anyway, if you didn't like it, that's your problem. Serena always loved my cooking, so the problem is clearly your taste buds.

Hee hee! So...what do you think? You have noticed, right?
[Yes]: Ha, I knew it! That's right! I've plaited my hair a tiny bit differently today! Thanks for noticing, Erdward!
[No]: Hmph! You really are useless, aren't you? I'm not sure you'd even notice if I suddenly sprouted another head!

I have a feeling Gemma and I are going to be good friends. We're planning to meet up tomorrow for tea and a good chinwag. She's a really lovely person. You're lucky to have her as a friend- don't forget that, will you?

I have to admit, I was a bit worried about whether or not we'd get on, but it turns out that living with you isn't so bad. You could do a bit more housework, but at least you don't leave dirty socks lying around. But don't let it go to your head, alright? I'm saying you're not doing too badly so far. Now you just need to avoid doing anything to annoy me for the rest of your life, and we'll get along just fine! Hee hee!

I love Veronica as an eternal companion, and she makes a strong case even for me about switching teams from Gemma to her. The connection the game needed to make to sell the shattering of Time's Sphere really paid off, and I can't imagine a Cobblestone without Veronica around to keep Erdward honest. Her issue is, rather obviously, her lost age. The game had one chance to give that back- right after Jarvis, like she expected- and after that, Veronica got too many assets for a model change for her adult form to matter in gameplay. With that said, it is impossible to get to this point without the pendant the Seer gives Veronica to let her temporarily turn adult: Why not quietly let that be more permanent while running around Cobblestone and in the brand new cutscene? I speak as if replacing child Veronica's model with adult's would be onerous, but modders have done exactly that to no ill effects- even if the first thing they did with it was make all the models use Jade's Hip Drop. The fundamental problem with adult Veronica as a permanent upgrade is in her costumes and Pep Power animations, and neither of those are a problem here. Why not go the extra mile and assauge those concerns?

Since Rab got his level 99 out of this, I decided to commit the fight. Here's the dialogue for taking no reward.

The additional eternal companion sequences bring to mind DQ8- at the end of the original release of that game, if you did the post-game content, you could marry Eight's childhood sweetheart Medea and save her from a toxic and foolish arranged marriage. The 3DS remake, because of Jessica's heightened popularity, added a bonus ending where Eight could marry her instead- a proper marriage, complete with wedding dress (and don't worry about Medea, her charmless husband Charmles annoyed his father one too many times and he breaks that up as a bonus). DQ11 seems to have been hit by the exact same thing, except that Gemma doesn't have a horrible situation- so she gets to amicably step aside- and more than one party member had significant demand for marriage, so the devs split the difference and gave them all, even if it came at the cost of taking away the "marriage" part of the deal. That might just be Rab's fault, though- depends on how much they'd give the married couples.

DQ11's party is one of the strongest in the series- a full seven members, and each one beloved, memorable, and a living, breathing part of Erdrea. With that said, it's not as if DQ8's cast was not equally strong- there were only three members on the PS2 version, but Yangus, Jessica and Angelo all meet the above definition of a good DQ party member. While there is probably an element of heteronormativity that let DQ11's party all get in on the marriages while Jessica got sole claim of Eight, I think another part of it is just how tightly connected each party member is to Erdward himself. Erik is Erdward's best bro forever, Jade and Hendrik have a debt they feel they have to repay, Veronica and Serena have a connection through their magical origins, and Rab is family. Yangus comes close to Erik's bond, but the two ultimately more closely resemble Erdward/Hendrik without all the bowing and scraping. Angelo, by contrast, has almost nothing connecting him with Eight, following the party out of a shared obligation, feeling unwelcome where he is and the whim to hit on Jessica some more. There's a difference between "a strong, well-rounded character" and "a good pick for the Hero's marriage", and while there are some games I need not mention that should probably ask that more often, DQ11 is a game that benefitted greatly from most of its characters managing to squeeze in both boxes.
