Mercedes/Annette: What is with that B Support, anyway?

Of all of Three Houses's beloved ships, none is more strange than the pairing of Mercedes and Annette. These two giggling schoolgirls make a perfect match, and yet their Support chain prominently features them arguing to the point of shattering their entire friendship. Mercedes has the interest in women, but the two girls sit at opposite ends of the age range, giving an almost terrifying 23-16 (28-21) age gap. What is it about these two girls that makes pairing them both easy and difficult?

The place to start looking is in their respective experiences. Mercedes's story is told in several parts, having gone through no less than four guardians, two of whom were abusive (it's Fodlan, the place is full of them). The part relevant to this analysis is her major background, with Baron Bartels. At some point in her childhood, her mother decided she was no longer safe there and took her away, leaving her eight-year-old younger brother to fend for himself for ten long years- it was deemed too big a risk to leave Bartels empty-handed, as that would have only increased his desperation. Both Mercedes and her mother regretted this decision, even before it turned out that Emile would one day be driven to murder the Bartels family.

Annette, in contrast, found herself without a father, once the man who sired her decided that his inability to get murdered by assassins was grounds for exile from Faerghus. Since she was thirteen at the time, she decided that she must've been the one at fault, and resolved to better herself through learning, prove that she was a worthy noble because of her brains as well as her Crest, and get sent to Garreg Mach's great school so she could track down her father, who was in hiding there.

And so the two girls met at the School of Sorcery, and to say they got on well would be an understatement. Mercedes, the girl who needs to be doting, and Annette, the girl who craves being doted on, fit together, and their youthful friendship would blossom, although every step of the way, the element that was Mercedes looking out for Annette persisted. Their friendship is almost built on that.

And this is when we get to the B Support. While on a shopping trip, Mercedes and Annette are accosted by a thief, who seems to have the opinion that they are spending with stolen gold and intends to reclaim it. Annette, being the sixteen year old girl that she is, steps forward and tells him to bring it on- to be fair, Garreg Mach teaches students how to kill bandits much more dangerous than this fellow- and Mercedes gets them out of the situation peacefully... before rounding on Annette and scolding her for her actions. Annette is as clueless as anyone else here. What's going on here?

The answer is in the A Support, of course. But it's a little confusing at best if you don't keep in mind what I brought up earlier: That Mercedes lost her cherished brother when he decided to do the right thing to keep her safe. Mercedes has been bearing that guilt for years, and it seems that with her close connection to Annette, she has found herself not a close friend or even a girlfriend, but a substitute baby sister.

But what of Annette? Unlike Mercedes, Annette's missing relative is still- technically- sane, and Annette has no desire or inclination to replace him. She may face a strong deficit in positive attention from her remaining family- her uncle does threaten that a useless Crested daughter is liable to be sold, after all- but she doesn't see that as something she needs to correct or compensate for. Mercedes's doting, while appreciated, is not what Annette entered the relationship seeking to acquire, and when Mercedes comes on too strong, Annette strikes back.

The problem with Mercedes/Annette, in the end, is a problem that is not necessarily resolved by their reconciliation in the A Support: Annette enjoys doing things with Mercedes, and given her clumsiness both in and out of the kitchen, she spends a lot of that time together being guided by Mercedes, but she does not enjoy being babied, while Mercedes has invested too much of her heart into Annette to allow her to drift away. The girls have entered a relationship where their respective traumas symbiotically feed the other, and because neither of them fully realise what the other one is suffering from and how it is expressed, they both allow the other to indulge in potentially harmful behaviours. Mercedes's nurturing instinct needs to be curtailed, so that she can let people leave her on good terms, while Annette's need for approval needs to be dealt with, so she can feel successful without standing on someone else's shoulders. Neither of these are onerous tasks- compared to some of the traumas the rest of Fodlan has to deal with, including Emile's own- and I am sure Mercedes and Annette will be well up to the task of doing so after the game, especially if Annette becomes a teacher of any kind.

Why isn't the problem obvious to the players? Because the clues just weren't there when we got the B Support. To understand Mercedes's maternal instinct, you not only need to know about Emile and the shattered relationship left there, but you need to consider how that element of her character shaped her approach to other people in her life. And not only is that just not feasible on a first playthrough, it also requires that you encounter this relationship information in Crimson Flower and bring it to a conversation that most players will be quick to develop in Azure Moon- and not only that, it wasn't there at launch, although it's likely it was intended to be so. While Mercedes also shows off her misplaced mothering instinct in many other Supports, only Felix's really has her partner bear her ministrations poorly and draw attention to them- many people in Garreg Mach find Mercedes's warm, doting presence reassuring, because again, many people in Garreg Mach didn't grow up with one. It's difficult to see Mercedes being maternal as a bad thing, and that's why it's a problem at all.

DQXIS L'Academie: Petite Medailles

There are three light pillars to worry about. This one is the main one to deal with- you can get an Insula elsewhere, but the third one is outright useless right now.

When you're not going to Nautica, you turn into a bubble, and instantly reappear in your destination. DQ6 allowed you to sail on the bottom of the sea, with new encounter tables and miscellaneous interesting stops like sunken ships and mermaid houses. None of that is in this game.

Welcome to the Champs Sauvage. There are two Town Stories here.

Erik: Before I teamed up with you I travelled all over Erdrea, picking pockets and sleeping under the stars. Don't think I ever came here, though. Let's head to the nearest town- when you find yourself in an strange place, it's always good to talk to the locals and get the lay of the land.
Veronica: Did you see her, Erdward? There was a little girl in a fancy uniform walking up the path just a little while ago.
There must be some kind of school around here. Let's go and have a look, shall we? Maybe we'll learn something!
Serena: What a strange place... The north is so different to the south- it's almost as if they're two completely separate worlds.
Well, Erdward? Which area shall we take a look around first?
Sylvando: Amaaazing! I never imagined we'd be able to use Lorelei's harp to sail through an underwater cave and pop up in the middle of a lake!
Maybe this isn't the only place we can get to through those whirlpools. Come on, Erdward- let's check them out! The Salty Stallion wants to go spelunking!
Jade: Ever since the fateful night we were driven from Dundrasil, Rab and I have wandered the world, keeping our true identities secret.
We passed through these lands several times, I'm sure. There's a village with some famous old ruins over the bridge to the south.
Rab: Jings! One minute we're at the bottom of the ocean, the next we find ourselves in the Champs Sauvage!
How long has it been since me and the Princess last set foot here? It can only be fate that's brought us back!

If you're wondering what Jade and Rab are on about, the Champs Sauvage is supposed to be accessible from Costa Valor, but a rockslide currently bars access, hence using a magical harp to pop up here.

North is L'Academie, south is Phnom Nonh. L'Academie is the easier objective and there's also stuff in L'Academie that makes doing it first a very good idea. The river south of where we start is the division between North and South Champs Sauvage, so I feel like the game does want us to start in the North first.

DQXI Lonalulu: The Mermaid's Burden

Content warning for suicidal themes

...Yeah, it do be like that. The introduction of Nautica is kinda important, but if you want to skip this one, I think you can make do.

Time to hand over the bridal veil.

Erik: Listen, Erdward. I'm not going to blame you if you don't tell Michelle the whole story. That's a heck of a thing to have to break to someone. ...What would I tell her? I'd give it to her straight. Kainoa would want her to know the truth. If someone I loved spent their whole life all on their own cause of me... I wouldn't be able to forgive myself.
Veronica: Erdward, do you think we should tell Michelle what really happened?
I mean, she's been waiting for Kai for so long... What if we told her that he was on his way, and asked us to bring her this veil as a present?
Serena: If I were Michelle, I'd want to know the real reason why Kai hasn't come back.
After all, it's only natural to want to know everything about the one you love...isn't it?
Sylvando: Listen, honey... if you don't want to tell Michelle what really happened, you don't have to.
When you're in love, anything seems possible- so whatever you tell her, she's sure to believe it. You might want to sugar the pill a little bit, though- after all, hell hath no fury like a woman spurned!
Jade: I know it's hard, but we have to give Michelle the veil and tell her why her fiancé isn't with us.
We have to see this through to the bitter end...
Rab: No matter how much it might grieve the poor wee lassie, her fiancé's gone. And once someone's gone, ye cannae bring them back.
Time flows differently for mermaids and men. Kainoa was caught by the current and drifted away...

Not the most encouraging of Party Chats.

...

Well then...

We have a very ominous choice. And this time, it's actually a choice. If we lie to her, she'll happily wait for Kai forever.

And that sounds depressing.

DQXI Lonalulu: The Mermaid's Curse

We begin today's update leaving the Valor channel for the first time.

This seems to be tricky business. Considering how important this channel is, the fact there's a foggy dangerous place is very concerning, but I'm sure people couldn't control that. Perhaps it's like the Bermuda Triangle.

Erik, not a nautical expert, wonders how worried he should be. When your sailor is yelling, you should be worried.

...Also, what happened to Dave?

At least, whatever Sylvando did seems to have helped out. We are no longer drowning.

Though, uh... where are we?

...Not that helpful.

It's, uh... right outside the Valor channel. It's also on our map.

The Salty Stallion has been run aground, and here we shall remain.

So we need to find something to pass the time.

Oh, don't make me worried any more!

DQXIS Outer Ocean: Fabulous Prizes!

So, I bet you're wondering why this update is going to be weird. This is mainly an exploration update, and we're even going to be paying a visit to Tickington, but the real important bit is that we have actually "skipped" some content! Don't worry, I'll be showing it later, but when you leave the canal and enter the open ocean for the first time, you automatically get pulled into a cutscene in this port I'm in front of. This is an introduction to the next Town Story, and I figure it's probably better for the flow of the content if I'm not openly blowing it off to explore.

Maritime slimes perfectly suited for the beach. As they grow bigger, they upgrade their shells for increasingly roomier models.

Seaslimes come from DQs 3, 6, and 10, and they're similar to what we've seen from shell slimes, with one key difference: they know Kabuff. In case you thought they didn't have enough defence to be getting on with.

Their eyesight is unrivaled under perfect conditions, but their low-light vision is so lackluster that they're no good at all come night-time.

War gryphons hail from DQs 6, 8, and 10, and I'm fairly sure they're the basic version of the Jamirus recolour set before this game gave us grim gryphons. They have flame breath, a sharp claw attack and the Magic Barrier spell. If the monsters co-ordinated, I think this fight might go to badly very quickly.

So then... this is where the update is going to get nasty. This is an explicit sequence break, no questions asked: We're not supposed to go to Sniflheim until after three Town Stories. The option is on the table, though, and we're going to take it for half of what it's worth.

Good to know. Clearly this place will be important.

DQXI Dundrasil: Due to the Dead

Let's ride off to Dundrasil!

...This horse hailer doesn't strike me as all that useful. The horse can't get up this ledge, for some reason.

At least, with the Switch version, we can get the horse up here and get going.

This path is a little weird- make sure you follow the map. At the very least, the north path is kinda hard to spot, so just crossing usually goes smoothly, although you might find yourself on the branch if you're playing blind.

Over here is just a bunch of enemies and some collections.

And we enter Dundrasil... while it's raining. That's not normal, but Dundrasil's rain is probably the the most important area to rain, but that's a thing you're really worried about later. There are enemies only found in the rain now, though.

DQXI Octagonia 3: Vince Vanquish Opens His Eyes

We start our third post in Octagonia wondering what happened to Vince? I am at least glad things felt discrete enough to make each chunk feel sensible, but still.

He's... he's not that old, is he?

Delays, delays... at least no one's been sending Hendrik our way yet. I can live with that.

Probably a good idea on both parties' parts.

Erik: Hey there, Champ! Heh. I guess you'd better get used to being called that... You know, I've been thinking. That pair you beat in the final were really something. Seriously, who were they? I mean, there can't be many people who can fight like that...
Veronica: Nice work, Erdward! The Rainbough is ours- at last! I am worried about Vince, though. I've never seen anyone just collapse like that before.
I really hope he's all right. Well, I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. For now, let's head back to our rooms and get some rest...
Serena: Oh, Erdward! I'm so proud of you! Well done! You were amazing!
It's just such a shame about Vince. I really hope he's okay...
Sylvando: Normally we'd be going wild after your big win, honey, but it seems like no one's in the party mood.
No, I guess we've all got other things on our mind. There's Vince, the disappearing fighters...oh, and the burglary at the orphanage. I guess the celebrations will have to wait.

...How many fighters have gone missing since last count?

(Imagine if Sylvando was one of them! Thankfully, he seems to have avoided that.)

DQXI Octagonia 2: Getting Physical

At least Vince respects what we can bring to this partnership. Which is honestly more than I can say for the reverse.

Vince has to go attend to his business. So yeah, I reckon we're going to remain without a Pep Power.

...

OK, the beastiary includes the Octagonian fighters as a matter of course (that's where those descriptions come from). But would it hurt to perhaps not let this achievement trigger unless you fought... real monsters?

By the way, we can't Party Chat here, despite the fact it clearly sounds like we should.

Yeah, the Underdigger and Showman kinda aren't all that interesting compared to their successors.

There's one thing we can say for sure: regardless of who wins, the battle between Erdward, Vince and Jade will be very exciting.

DQXI Octagonia: Masked Martial Arts

Welcome to the next Town Story, and it is a lengthy one.

Welcome to Octagonia! A town focused on martial arts.

Or, well, Sylvando can say what I was planning on. Ish. This isn't my scene.

I'm not entirely sure Hendrik would be fond of how this town has been set up. Whether he does or not, this statue is also a warning sign that the Octagonians might get in contact with Hendrik- which would be bad.

...The what now?

So we're not going to escape participating in a testosterone tournament after all.

Veronica... a dance? It's a bunny girl in a martial arts town- it was either wrestling or "wrestling".

Well, we should have a look at that in good time.
