RD Chapter 3-11 Battle: I'll cross that bridge when I get to it

New game, same stupid map. We see RD zoom in a little more from time to time, why does the fact this map is long and thin make this screen hate it so much?

Huh, Sigrun and Tanith are fail conditions. Never spotted that. We'll do a good job of not doing that.

Our boss today is a disposable Daein general. I guess they knew some people were either going to kill or not train Nolan. He's a pretty solid Warrior, all right, and he comes with a weapon that will still kinda hurt even if you're not a flier. Fliers without Nullify will take 102 damage before Defence from this thing. Also he'll drop it, but...

Two Authority stars, representative of the fervent devotion the Daein Army has to Micaiah and her miracles. Again, Micaiah herself possesses zero.

These four characters are in possession of an item called a Shine Barrier, which is a one-use item that can make a square completely impassable, even to fliers, for a period of time. I'm told it might be permanent, but I'm also told they can wear off. Whichever is the case, these guys can make our lot very unpleasant, because this bridge is still as poorly maintained now as it was three years ago- it's completely full of pitfalls that can end our movement and Stun us.

This guy also has a Physic we can relieve him of.

This guy only possesses a Rescue staff. The Rescue staff gives +5 Spd and +4 Def on equipped, and still does what you expect it to when cast. This particular one is also padlocked into his inventory, so no pinchies.

Clearly, this guy got sent here because Micaiah wants to get rid of him.

"Maybe we should hear them out?"

Well, you can't say he doesn't follow orders.

We start out with a brand new Player Phase jingle denoting our position as the Apostle's Army. I continue to not have access to a link to prove my point, but the melody of this jingle honestly sounds like the William Tell Overture.

On a related note, these guys are still Daeins, the enemy phase theme is still "Daein Army" despite the lack of familiar faces on the enemy side.

Astrid opens hostilities. She ended last map on 90 EXP, let's see Blossom work its magic...

...Yeah, I think Astrid and Blossom are going to get along just fine.

Getting everyone else over is going to be a bit more humdrum.

Lethe got Calill Shoved in order to get Astrid a heal, at least.

Marcia still has Steel weapons. I actually had to reset and go back to base so I could give Marcia a Steel Blade (and Calill a Heal staff, actually).

Ike and Ranulf follow behind. This map is Seize, Ike must cross this bridge at some point.

Oh boy, time for Sigrun and Tanith to show off their "not everyone else" qualities.

Mist missed this one. Also she's not one-rounding anymore. I swear I'm not trying to make this rivalry a thing.

The one Astrid poked ran away.

Mist poked a different one and got one fantastic level.

Also swordmasters are prey to her.

Apparently this guy won't be our problem for a little bit.

Despite getting acquainted with the business end of an axe, Imbue has brought Sigrun back good as new. Don't count out Imbue.

I just wanted the excuse.

There is an invisible line just before these sandbags that, once crossed, will trigger an event that will be rather unpleasant for us. Our first action crossing this line must be to kill this mage or that warrior. The mage was an easier target.

Tanith moves back here, but honestly, I'm not sure if this move was for the best. If nothing else, I couldn't move her down.

Tibarn's here, too! He just can't stay away from these things.

よお、待たせたな。
フェニキス軍二千。
今から加わるぜ。

Tibarn, stop giving numbers. Two thousand Phoenicians, I thought you had a shortage?

Reyson was completely absent from our army in the "pre-battle" base. He's not even at the bottom of the roster in red text!

...

Not judging, but I think at this point, you two don't get to pretend you're platonic anymore.

Don't think this gets you your platonic card back.

[Tibarn! You’re horrible! I am not an anchor!]

Leanne, you canonically weigh half as much as a little girl. You aren't weighing anything down, don't worry.

Leanne is dropped off in one of three squares. Tibarn wants to drop her to the west, but there's a warrior standing on that square, and a mage to the north, so most people who don't prepare for this event have Leanne dropped to the east.

With her 5 movement, it's very difficult to save her from this tile.

Look at me, having gone back to base once, knowing I forgot three things, and not realising one of those things was getting this girl those Daemon Cards.

Reyson and Leanne have an iron will in spite of their apparent incapacity to back it up, and Tibarn and Naesala do absolutely nothing to curb this.

Although they might grumble about it when it makes their job harder.

Ike is less helpful than Tibarn is.

7 Magic, 8 Might card at the strongest in her pocket (Daemon has 12 Might), Leanne is still kinda shaky at actually dealing damage. Not that we had the highest of hopes of her leading with that, her getting kills at all is more of a joke and a way to get EXP faster than Galdrar. Reminder that any attack Leanne launches is at the cost of two better characters not taking alternative actions.

Calill could only get this far, and Elwind she shall perform. I decide to master Wind first so I can pass this tome around to someone else who needs a copy (we have spare Elthunders).

At least she didn't need to dodge?

Astrid at least waits for the second hit.

Sigrun, most people could've oneshot from here.

Marcia finished off the warrior, and noticed she can stand on this tile (which happens to be a pitfall).

Ike orders the yellow Hawk units to go over here. I need this EXP. We'll talk Tibarn later.

Leanne reaches this position, and Vigours Lyre and Sigrun. If you get an east drop, you're probably going to have to dedicate Leanne's Vigour and your pegasi to getting her out. Assuming the pegasi still have actions to perform.

This is one of the Shine Barrier jerks, and left to his own devices, he will place it where Lyre is now standing. Let's ruin his day.

Bonus!

Mist gets a kill too, and continues Mia's grand tradition of redundant Cancels.

...Sigrun. Really?

I know that's +5 Spd, but can Sigrun really not double 22?

She can get this guy, though.

The hawk tribe, annoyingly, go north before they go west. They're out of the enemy's way, but they're not out of mine.

Well, Tanith's day is very exciting.

At least her level ups are going great. Skill cap.

All right, things have gotten interesting in this chokepoint...

...That's a choice. Fun fact: That tile is a pitfall.

Mend Priest takes care of the cavalier's owies.

Mist takes care of Tanith's.

Tanith hits and runs. This tile she's standing on is also a pitfall. This does kind of trap her for a bit, but I can always make do if necessary.

Calill tries to nab any kills she can before the pegasi turn up the pace of the map so fast she can't catch up.

Ike and Ranulf cross the pitfall under Marcia. This trick from PoR is still here, and rather than patch it, they seem to have balanced the pitfalls such that it's in your interest to do this.

Marcia is now free to contribute.

And gain the pegasus stats.

Another cavalier for Lyre to be one point of damage shy of killing.

Time for a Leanne kill!

SPEED!

Astrid has Sol now, she's at the point where she can hold her own with an underpowered weapon.

There's a pitfall on the north edge Heather must take care to actively avoid.

...Heather, don't fail me now!

Well, one bonus hit isn't terrible. I really should've just sold this.

Calill, unfortunately, couldn't get far around that pitfall.

Well, might as well get Sigrun some EXP.

The Rescue staff has like 40 crit. I'd be more worried if it did any damage.

Sigrun really has to fight for proper stats. She grows like a pegasus- Skill, Luck and Res- and while you'd think we can BEXP that later, that doesn't cover the now.

At least these guys are gone.

This guy totally had the choice to attack Ike and Ranulf. I shouldn't have been so sloppy. Good thing Power of Provoke has him covered.

Sigrun was positioned on a pitfall ahead, and now she's getting everyone I thought Tanith was going to get.

This guy. Rescued. To the same spot the guy was already standing. Wonder why he wasn't even moved to the opposite side.

Oh hey, these things are on the map. Every single one of these things on this map is a Stone catapult. That means Sigrun, Tanith and Leanne aren't going to melt on contact with them.

Sigrun heals up from her encounters.

Calill is the one to take out the former Rescue staffer.

Back to geting actual level ups. Luck cap.

Leanne had to use a Reaper Card on the last one of these, but that point of Magic means she can tech down to Spectre.

No HP this time?

Ilyana followed up on that level with this excellent one. I believe it is actually a secret perfect: HP and Str are capped. Defence is now capped too.

Mist passes through Tanith.

Same with Ike and Ranulf. Let's try and block off all the red units this time.

Lyre gets another kill.

Marcia picks one up as necessary.

Astrid, sadly, does not.

But she did get this. Yay?

Sigrun did manage this one.

Although I would like her to continue covering the pitfall. Probably should've kept it as the one in the south.

Incidentally, this line here is a line of pitfalls, Shine Barrier and sandbags. Sigrun and Tanith as force-deploys mean you can get Ike to the end even if you screw up this part of the bridge massively. Still, though, if you don't know the flier trick, your cavaliers are not going to have a good time.

Lethe has caught up.

Heather does not. This is going to get awkward.

Well, those odds could be better.

She dodged. Speed cap.

She prepares to deal with this guy, too, since he doesn't like to move.

Those odds are a lot higher abort abort abort

Dodged again. Strength cap, but I'd like a bit more than two stats.

Astrid continuing to get some work in with Sol. Magic cap.

Oh, and this guy she didn't kill on Player Phase went for her.

Tanith gets some excitement over here, too.

Enough for her fourth level. Annoyingly, one statup. Tut tut. She'll be somewhat fine, but she does need a lot of effort if she wants to hit the omnicap. As a character who came in at level 16 probably would.

This is the Mend staffer. I wanted that Ellight...

Time for Leanne to get hit by catapults. She gets 20 damage on direct hit, 10 damage on splash. Ilyana is going to be on Leanne healing duty.

Lyre also gets splash damaged. For some reason, catapult operators like going for the splash damage instead of the direct hit. If he had gone for Lyre directly, he would've hit me three times, instead of me once and them once.

(I'm fairly sure he was aiming at Lyre because Power of Provoke.)

Leanne uses Blessing for Sigrun before Imbue can kick in. This is just hilarous to me.

Ilyana catches Lyre this time. I'm sending her into the breach.

And Heather shanks this guy in the absence of an Ellight steal.

Sure, why not?

Score.

Lethe gives Heather a push, so Leanne can Vigour them both.

Lethe needs to take out this catapult engineer.

Marcia can take on the general and...

Oh. Never mind. So much for the Steel Lance being a handicap.

Lyre can take out this guy.

HAH HAH!

Calill handles the Leanne heal this turn.

The general Astrid is currently standing next to has a Horseslayer. This plan is ridiculous and I will not hear a word against it.

This guy has a Shine Barrier, but Heather is one space too far away from obtaining it, so might as well just kill him.

That kill got Sigrun her promotion, and Falcoknight promotion continues to bother me for screenshotting. And we still have Tanith to go!

22 Strength. My pegasi normally turn out great, but Sigrun...

How coincidental, that I checked Tanith's stats now to see what the deal was with that Def only level. Tanith has better Str and Spd, but nothing else. Well, before promotion.

This won't get her the promotion, but it'll mostly get her there.

Heather's got nothing to do, sadly.

Mist stands here with Florete and tries fishing for ranged attackers.

Ranulf picks up Ike to decrease the space they take up.

This guy went straight to Lyre. They know.

Turns out this was probably for the best, but that was actually kind of close. Astrid isn't that good... yet...

She's got more things to dodge this turn.

Especially good since there's unblockable damage flying around.

This is also unpleasant for Tanith. She dodges this one.

And Leanne gets a direct hit. Lucky she can survive one.

Even Lethe is attracting ranged attention.

Hey. Daein. Stop hitting yourself.

Well, that is the greatest timing ever. I was wondering how I was going to get this.

Tanith being all dark and badass while Sigrun is softer. I quite like the red.

Tanith is getting closer to taking on Marcia's power level. These two tend to turn out pretty equal, with Tanith being stronger and Marcia being faster.

Wyvern reinforcements. Concerning.

Also how far Leanne can move. Yeah, she's not doing anything exciting this turn.

Meanwhile, have a look at this know I have to untie.

This was my cunning plan. Extra Steel Greatlance. That's the extent of my cunning plan.

First thing's first, get the cheap kills with the units who need the help.

Marcia takes on a high health target.

Nifty. She was supposed to be developing her offensive magic, but she'll need this eventually.

And Calill gets the Leanne boost.

Ilyana moves up to heal her up here.

Lyre kills a general for her turn.

Nifty!

And a nice solid score on this.

Lance cap. She'll need to switch back to bows to get the SS Rank, but lances are the correct option right now tactically.

For example, there's an enemy up ahead Astrid is hooking in.

Tanith goes for the kill.

Already starting on Stuns.

Calill gets a kill! She equips Thunder because she's wondering who those wyverns are going to hit.

He drops his Horseslayer, too, I didn't pass on that. I don't see myself using this.

Here's hoping!

Well, at least I got this. I wasn't sure if he'd put his bow back on if he fired his ballista, but might as well.

Ranulf gets even closer. I really need Ike to make it up to the back.

Astrid has come a long way from Tashoria.

More Leanne bullying.

And Ranulf contributes! I think this is Power of Provoke at work, so I can't begrudge it too badly. Ranulf had to move up at some point!

More reinforcements- the halberdier and warriors in front of the tent. That tent is not the Visitable kind.

I forgot to Revert-Halfshift Lyre one turn, so she has to use her untransformed movement. This isn't a problem, but still awkward.

Heather moves to prepare for another steal.

This guy ran away, but was not healed. Easy pickings.

Leanne noticed a chance for mayhem.

Back to these levels, are we? She's not capping in a hurry, but she has a literal 0% growth in Strength, so she doesn't have to worry about omni-capping. Although a heron with no stats is as valuable as one with, at least when it comes to everything other than getting them kills.

Tanith takes out an archer.

And gets back to getting some amazing levels.

This isn't a kill? Dang.

At least it's still a Lyre level up. Three more levels with HP and she's capped that. Plus one more point in Skill... am I going to be BEXPing Lyre?

Lethe, meanwhile, is Smiting.

At least Calill can snatch up a kill. She's using Elfire because I'm expecting Calill to get targeted a lot. She did not get targeted a lot.

Someone really needs to finish this guy off, and Marcia remembered to finally land the finishing blow.

Marcia really shoring up her bulk. Her defensive advantage over Sigrun and Tanith is impressive.

Marcia also comes to pick up some Support gains. I usually wind up with a pegasus pair, although Sigrun and Marcia have similar bonuses for Tanith.

Ilyana: "Again, Leanne?"

Mist, he already had 0/0/0, was Cancel really necessary?

And even more Mist power.

Astrid techs up to an Iron Greatlance to secure the kill.

Ranulf makes sure to stay out of trouble. Without the catapults, that's a lot easier.

Excellent, he attacked this turn. Weird he went for Lethe, though.

So yeah, something about going for Calill? I can't read this game.

And this one is pristine!

Calill can secure a kill.

At least she's getting levels fine. Magic and Speed, give me Magic and Speed.

Lethe is sneaking closer to Goran for that boss kill. That was a miss, though. Goddammit.

Lyre can't miss this one, at least.

Tanith just stunning me.

And we need to sneak past here...

Let's set this up for someone else.

Astrid needs her Bow EXP.

And of course, Sigrun gets a kill.

Welcome to Sigrun. That Strength is unusual.

I lucked into this one. I think this pairup works.

Time to spam some heals.

Ranulf puts down Ike. We're finishing next turn.

I don't think they intended it, but this line is pretty funny.

No dodge, but at least no Sol in return.

Fun fact: Astrid has 20 statups left to gain in the next 15 levels. Parablossom really helps.

Calill and Heather move forward. If I was smart, I'd move Ilyana over next to Heather and get the other Converse dialogue here. Too much mental effort was put into stealing that Steel Greatlance.

Yes, this is what I was doing with Heather.

Lyre pushes Heather out of Goran's melee range.

Lethe gets the kill.

...This Lethe is one heck of a Lethe. I probably should be more concerned about Speed.

How much do you think she can do to carry the team there?

Goran: Your troops fought bravely, I commend your effort.
Ike: But your force has been obliterated. I order you to retreat. Continue this fight and you will die.
Goran: Fool, the battle is not over yet! The Maiden of Dawn has helped us overcome every adversity!

He's really lost it, hasn't he? What does that mean for the rest of the Daein soldiers? ...I'm concerned now.

Money.

Also there's one of these. Tanith dug it up because she had a biorhythm upper right now.

And we're done.

Micaiah's Daein is stronger than Ashnard's. Just how much more devoted are they to her?

Well, Micaiah's soldiers are willing to die for her. I don't think Micaiah would like that.

Sigrun and Tanith are new, they haven't actually learned about the Maiden of Dawn yet.

This is a pretty apt comparison.

I think the intention is to have Tanith be superior about her devotion to Sanaki over Daein's to Micaiah, but I quite like the interpretation that Tanith is well aware that she, too, could be considered at least somewhat deluded.

Time to check back in on the Daein crew.

Blink frame. I like this one.

...Who the hell are you, what are you doing here, and why do you think destroying a massive stone bridge is a reasonable option that we can just do?

As admirable as avoiding the deaths of your soldiers is, I do have to wonder if those Daein soldiers are not already dead because they're too close to the Apostle's Army and too devoted to Micaiah to withdraw.

This, though. Screw this guy. He really just casually orders the Daein Army to cannon fodder. Honestly, the fact Micaiah is not there himself is probably offensive to him.

Micaiah points out that she's the boss, and not this guy.

Here's hoping this is a functional order.

The inspector thinks he has authority here.

Sothe points out that, of course, his authority matters only as much as he stays alive to enforce it.

Hah, as if Pelleas would discipline Micaiah for this decision. The Senate, on the other hand...

Well, Micaiah's got guts.

...There was a thud.

Micaiah's... This has gotten a lot worse.

Micaiah is... very concerned. As most people should be.

I'm not really sure what is causing this, but this is going to be a big deal if true.

Yune's been tweeting like mad this whole soliloquy (the bird kind, not the internet kind). I honestly don't have this impression of Micaiah's experience with Farsight, but it's a fairly expected one.

…どう…したのかしら……
最近はすこし……
ましだった…のに……

この頃…頭に靄がかかったようで……
……わたしの…ちから……
なくな…って…?
ふふ…… ちからなんて……

……へんね……
ねぇ…ユンヌ………

I was looking forward to some kind of explanation, but this line of dialogue is in pieces because Micaiah is pausing so often and the machines can't actually handle translating the half-words. Shame.

Meanwhile, Rafiel heard something.

It's that mysterious voice that called him to Tellius in the first place.

And Reyson also got the message.

Nailah, on the other hand, did not. This voice seems to be only for herons.

Coincidentally, all three times this voice has become a factor in the plot so far, it has told the herons to go to Daein. I don't think there's any reason for this other than "the plot has just been happening in Daein three times", but still. One can make the joke that this voice is trying to kill these three.

Two sentences that really don't sound like they should be uttered in sequence.

Reyson just kinda... insists, without really asking Rafiel's opinion on the matter.

Rafiel is happy to go there. They're worried about Leanne, but honestly, there's more people to be worried about in Daein, especially for these two...

Perfect turncount.

Next time: It's time for That Plot Point.
